Isaac Daniel Roosevelt (September 29, 1790 — December 24, 1863) was an American businessman, and the paternal grandfather of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Biography
He was born in Hyde Park, New York to Jacobus Roosevelt III (1760–1847) and Catherine Welles (1762–1829). In 1825 he married Mary Rebecca Aspinwall, daughter of John Aspinwall and Susan Howland. They had two sons:
- James Roosevelt I
- John Aspinwall Roosevelt
His eldest son James Roosevelt I was the father of diplomat James Roosevelt Roosevelt and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Younger son John was the father of tennis players Grace Walton Roosevelt and Ellen Crosby Roosevelt.
Death
Isaac D. Roosevelt died on December 24, 1863, at the age of 73. He was buried in the churchyard of St. James Episcopal Church in Hyde Park, New York.[1]
Legacy
His house, the center of his Rosedale estate, still stands on Riverview Circle in Hyde Park. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993, along with a cottage and boathouse on the Hudson River nearby.
