James Atkinson (born 6 January 1995) is an English footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Scottish club Queen of the South.
Career
Born in Carlisle, Cumbria, Atkinson began his career at Queen of the South. He was first included in a matchday squad on 23 July 2011, remaining an unused substitute as the team lost 2–0 after extra time at Ayr United in the first round of the Scottish Challenge Cup.[1] He was also unused in 18 Division One matches that season, a campaign which ended in relegation.
Atkinson was also on the bench when Queen of the South won the 2013 Scottish Challenge Cup Final against Partick Thistle on 7 April that year.[2] He made his debut on 4 May, replacing Lee Robinson for the final seven minutes of a 1–0 win at Albion Rovers; the result gave champions Queen of the South a record Second Division total of 92 points.[3]
On 29 January 2014, Atkinson played his first professional game, a 1–1 Scottish Championship draw at Greenock Morton, replacing injured Zander Clark after 24 minutes.[4] In Clark's absence, he started his first game three days later, a 2–1 win at Livingston.[5] Two weeks later, he was given a straight red card in a game against Dundee at Palmerston Park for conceding a penalty with a foul on Martin Boyle, which Ryan Conroy converted past replacement Calum Antell for the only goal of the game.[6]
