Jan Quarless (born c. 1950) is a former American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Eastern Michigan University in 1992 and at Southern Illinois University Carbondale from 1997 to 2000, compiling a career college football record of 1536. Quarless is the superintendent of schools in Dollar Bay, Michigan.[1] He was selected to the Northern Michigan University and Upper Michigan Sports Halls of Fame.

Playing career

Quarless played for Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan from 1970 to 1972 seasons and was team captain his senior year.[2]

Coaching career

Eastern Michigan

Quarless took his first head coaching position as the head coach of the Eastern Michigan Eagles for the 1992 football season.[3] Quarless took over mid-season as coach at Eastern after the first four games were coached by Jim Harkema, who resigned mid-season after ten years as head coach.[4] Quarless's team produced a record of 1 win and 6 losses.[5] The lone victory was a 76 home game against Ohio University.[6]

Southern Illinois

Quarless was the 19th head football coach for the Southern Illinois Salukis in Carbondale, Illinois and he held that position for four seasons, from 1997 until 2000. His overall coaching record at SIU was 14 wins, 30 losses, and 0 ties. This ranks him tenth at SIU in terms of total wins and 14th at SIU in terms of winning percentage. [7]

Assistant coaching

Quarless had several tenures as assistant coach for several collegiate programs, including Eastern Michigan, Bowling Green,[8] Kansas,[9] and Wake Forest.[10]
