Jason Binn is an American publisher and entrepreneur.
Career
Binn is the founder of Ocean Drive magazine, a luxury publication focusing on Miami, in 1993.[3] In 1998, he founded Niche Media, a publisher of numerous regional luxury magazines such as Hamptons Magazine, Aspen Peak, Boston Common, Capitol File, Gotham, Los Angeles Confidential and Michigan Avenue. Niche was acquired by Greenspun Media Group in 2007.[4]
Binn became chief adviser to Kevin Ryan in 2010,[5] the founder and CEO of online luxury retailer Gilt. He later resigned as CEO of Niche and became its chairman.
In 2012, Binn founded DuJour Media.[6] The quarterly print publication and digital magazine target wealthy readers by accessing Gilt’s database of subscribers.[7][8]
He has been credited with breaking a number of major stories, including an exclusive interview with Dennis Rodman on his visit to North Korea as a guest of Kim Jong-un,[6] and Donald Sterling after his racist rant where he admitted he should have paid off his ex-girlfriend.[9]
Since 2008 he has distributed his photographs of parties and social events through the service WireImage.[10]
In March 2016, Binn posted a photo on Instagram featuring Ivana Trump with her newest grandson born to Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner,[11] but as a courtesy to the family, he removed the photo soon after.[12]
Binn, as someone who built a business on glossy photos of the rich and famous, he is supporter of the new generation of wealthy millennials, such as designer Andrew Warren, who is part of a young group that understands the impact if social media and the use of imagery and photographs to inspire new followers.[13]
Education
Binn originally attended the University of Cincinnati, he then graduated cum laude from the Boston University[2] College Of Communications.
Awards and Recognition
In 2005 Binn was profiled in Forbes magazine's "Forbes 400"[14] and was awarded Ernst & Young's "Entrepreneur of the Year."[15]
In 2007, he was inducted into the American Advertising Federation's “Advertising Hall of Achievement”.[16]
In 2008, Binn was featured in Crain’s “40 Under 40” list of successful entrepreneurs.[17]
In 2008, Binn received the Boston University's Distinguished Alumni Award for Service to Profession for his leadership and cutting edge work in the field of communications and media.[18][19]
In fall 2012, Crain's New York said that Binn, "as befits a lone entrepreneur, has the most unique strategy", for making print magazines successful in a time print is losing steam to digital media[20]
Personal Life
Binn was born Jason Frederick Binn to Moreton I. Binn and Penny I. Binn[21][2] in Roslyn, New York.[22][23]
He married Haley Lieberman in December 2003.[21] The couple separated in 2016.[24]
