The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST) is the entrance examination to get admission in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV). This exam is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Candidates have to go through JNVST in Class-V and 80 meritorious students get admission in Class-VI. There is another JNVST that is conducted for students of Class-VIII, on qualifying for which some meritorious students get admission into Class-IX depending upon the vacancies of the same JNV. JNVST for Class-VI consists of three sections: mental ability, arithmetic and regional language skills. The duration of the exam is two hours. There is no fee for the exam.

Exam notification

Advertisement for JNVST is done through Doordarshan, India radio and local news paper. Individual school principals are also notified. The JNVST exam form can be downloaded from the official website.[2] There is no examination fee associated with JNVST. The following JNVs don't conduct JNVST.

Reservations and quotas

For Class-VI

A maximum 80 students get admission in any Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) with an exception of 40 number of students for the JNVs with lack of accommodation. a)75% of the seats is for rural area students and rest are for urban area students. b)Reservation for SC and ST students depends upon their population proportion with national average as the lower bound. c)One third seats are for girl students. d)3% reservation for differently abled students.

Dates

JNVST is conducted once in a year for a JNV. It is usually conducted every year on the first Sunday of February in 525 summer-bound JNVs, in the first week of April in 53 winter-bound JNVs and in the first week of June in 3 extremely winter bound JNVs.

Pattern

JNVST is conducted in 21 languages. Candidates have to opt for a single medium of language. The exam consists of three sections: Mental ability, arithmetic and regional language skills. Mental ability consists of 50% of the weight with 60 minutes of time allocated whereas arithmetic and regional language skills consists 25% of weight each with 30 minutes of time allocated. The total duration of the exam is two hours.
