Joe Bailey Cheaney (December 30, 1902 – March 18, 1983) was the fifth head football coach for the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets located in Brownwood, Texas and he held that position for nine seasons, from 1928 until 1947. His career coaching record at Howard Payne was 58 wins, 19 losses, and 9 ties. As of the conclusion of the 2007 season, this ranks him second at Howard Payne in total wins and first at Howard Payne in winning percentage (.727).[1]
Cheaney had a break in his coaching from 1935 to 1942, when he was the head coach at Texas State University.[2]
