John G. Brunner (born December 8, 1951) is an American businessman and former chairman and CEO of Vi-Jon Laboratories. [1] Born in St. Louis, Missouri, John Brunner is a retired U.S. Marine Captain and is a graduate of Harding University. He also holds a MBA from Washington University located in St. Louis, Missouri.[2] Brunner is a member of the Missouri Republican Party and is currently running for Governor in the 2016 Missouri Governor's Race.[3]
Family
John has been married to his wife, Jan, for 38 years. Together they have three children and ten grandchildren and live in St. Louis, Missouri.[4]
Business Career
Brunner returned from the military to come home and help run his family's business, Vi-Jon Laboratories. Founded in 1908 by his grandfather, John B. Brunner, Vi-Jon Laboratories is one of the nation's oldest private brand personal care manufacturers in the world. .[5] Operated out of St. Louis Missouri, Vi-Jon Laboratories specializes in several private brand products including nail, hand hygiene, first aid, baby care, and oral care. [6] Brunner first joined the firm in 1978 moving on to become President in 1992. During his tenure, Germ-X, the massively popular and successful antibacterial hand-sanatizer was launched in 1997. [7] He served as chairman at Vi-Jon until he retired as chief executive officer in 2009 and then as chairman in 2011.[8] During his tenure the company grew its annual sales from $23 million in 1994 to $300 million by 2006.[9] The year of his retirement (2009) Vi-Jon Laboratories had its best year financially, bringing in $600 million in sales for that year.[10]
Military Career
John Brunner served in the United States Marine Corps as an Infantry Platoon Commander[11] going on active duty in 1974. He served on several deployments in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean[12] and served 14 years in the Marine Reserves.[13]
Political Career

Brunner has previously run unsuccessfully for the United States Senate in Missouri in 2012, coming in second place to U.S. Representative Todd Akin.[14] As a first time candidate, Brunner spent more than $7.5 million of his own money in the ultimately, unsuccessful primary.[15] [16] [17] [18] On October 5, 2015 Brunner officially announced his campaign for Governor at a rally held in Springfield, Missouri. He joins three other Republican candidates and three Democratic candidate in the 2016 race.[19] The Republican primary is August 2, 2016 and the general election is November 8, 2016.
