Jessica Sooyoun Jung (born April 18, 1989),[2] known professionally as Jessica, is an American singer, actress, songwriter, fashion designer and businesswoman currently based in South Korea. Born and raised in San Francisco, California, she rose to fame in the late 2000s as a member of the South Korean girl group, Girls' Generation. Debuting in 2007, the group quickly found success and became one of the best-selling artists in South Korea. During her time in the group, Jessica was active outside of the group in musical theatre, portraying Elle Woods in the Korean production of Legally Blonde in 2010, reprising again in 2012; she also made her acting debut with the drama Wild Romance. In addition to this, Jung has released various soundtracks to Korean dramas. In 2014, Jung was removed from the group due to conflicts between her personal schedule and the group's. That same year, she established her fashion brand, Blanc & Eclare. Jung is set to release her debut solo album in May 2016.
Early life
Jessica was born in San Francisco.[2][3] While on vacation in South Korea, she and her sister, Krystal, were spotted in a shopping mall by S.M. Entertainment; she later joined the company in 2000.[4] She spent seven years as a trainee before debuting as part of the Korean girl group Girls' Generation. Jessica attended Korea Kent Foreign School during her teenage years.[3] Her younger sister, Krystal, is a member of the Korean girl group f(x). They later had a reality TV show called Jessica & Krystal. Jessica is fluent in both English and Korean after moving to South Korea at the age of 11.[5]
Music career
Girls' Generation (2007–2014)
Jessica was the first member to sign with SM Entertainment in 2000. In 2007, she was chosen as a member of the group Girls' Generation. The 9-member girl group debuted on August 5, 2007.
On September 30, 2014, Jessica announced on her personal Weibo account that she was "forced out" of the group.[6] SM Entertainment later confirmed this, stating that Jessica would no longer be a member of Girls' Generation due to constant conflicts with the group's and Jessica's schedules. The company also stated that Girls' Generation would continue to promote with eight members while still managing Jessica's solo activities.[6][7] Jessica also released a statement of her own through her fashion company, Blanc Group, explaining that she was one-sidedly asked to leave Girls' Generation by the agency and the 8 other members.[8] Jessica's final song with Girls' Generation is "Divine", which was released as a part of the repackaged version of their first Japanese greatest hits album, The Best.
On August 6, 2015, S.M. Entertainment released an official statement regarding Jessica's future, it was stated that the company and former member of Girls' Generation had officially parted ways.[9]
Solo singing career
In addition to her group activities, Jessica released two singles with Seohyun and Tiffany: "Love Hate" (Hangul: "오빠 나빠", lit. Bad Older Brother)[10] and "Mabinogi (It's Fantastic!)".[11] Jessica collaborated with 8Eight for the song "I Love You" from their second album, Infinity, which was released on March 3, 2008. She is not the one in the music video, but the one singing the harmony and adlibs. In addition, she had various duets — one with Shinee member, Onew, called "One Year Later", and one with Park Myung-soo, "Naengmyeon". She sang the "Seoul Song" with Super Junior's Leeteuk, Sungmin, Donghae, Siwon, Ryeowook and Kyuhyun and fellow group members Taeyeon, Sunny, Sooyoung and Seohyun.
Jessica released a digital single titled "Sweet Delight" on October 13, 2010. In 2011, Jessica participated in the soundtrack of KBS drama Romance Town with the song "Because Tears Are Overflowing" (Korean: 눈물이 넘쳐서 ).[12] In 2012, Jessica sang "What To Do" (feat. In February 2016, Jessica announced that her first solo album would be released under her new agency, Coridel Entertainment.[1][17] In April 2016, representatives announced that Jung would release her first album the following month in May.[18] On April 30, Coridel Entertainment released the track list which included the title track, "Fly", featuring Fabolous. Jung wrote and composed four out of the six tracks. The name of the album has yet to be released.[19]
