Juno Beach Academy of Canadian Studies is an Alternative Program public high school in Calgary, Alberta. First housed in Van Horne School, then later in the old Lord Shaughnessy High School, it is now located in the Dr Norman Bethune School. The Calgary Board of Education runs the program as an alternative for students with a focus on humanities (such as police or military careers). Academics are also highly focused upon (for those most interested in attending college or University after graduation). There is a particular focus on Canadian studies. The graduating class of 2007, the first class to graduate, was given the opportunity to go to Europe. Here they visited many important landmarks, such as the Palace of Versaille, the Vimy Ridge Memorial, and Juno Beach in Normandy. Currently the next class to go to Europe will be the graduating 2012 class.
JBA is a school with a uniform program in effect. This is to promote discipline, a sense of structure, and also to prevent any harassment due to shoddy clothing. Black dress shoes and black socks are part of both types of dress. The school has two basic uniform styles.
Number Ones These are worn on Mondays, Fridays, and special events. these events could include Remembrance Day, or the anniversary of D-Day. This uniform includes:
- Grey tweed pants or a Calgary Tartan Kilt (w. black knee highs or black tights)
- White Dress Shirt
- Calgary Tartan Tie
- Black cardigan or blazer
Number Twos These are worn on Tuesdays to Thursdays:
- Black Pants
- Red or White polo shirt
The cardigan can also be worn. The JBA hooded sweater can be worn instead of a cardigan as
Drill
The School offers a precision drilling element not seen in conventional schools. Drill at Juno Beach Academy is done to the standards of the Canadian Forces. A basic amount of drill is learned by the entire student body.
Some students choose to get a more in-depth understanding of drill, and take a special class approved by the CBE. Drill and Parade is a course with three levels (15, 25, and 35). Credits are also offered in these courses (3, 3, and 5 respectively). The curriculum of the class follows the old CFP 201, the standard manual for CF drill.
