Karachi Kings (Urdu,:کراچی کنگز) is a Pakistani professional Twenty20 cricket team that competes in Pakistan Super League. The team is based in Karachi the provincial capital of Sindh, Pakistan.[1] The team was formed in 2015, as a result of the formation of the Pakistan Super League by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The team is currently captained by Shoaib Malik and coached by Mickey Arthur a former South African cricketer.[2] It is owned by Salman Iqbal of the ARY Group.[3]

Franchise history

The Karachi Kings were created when the decision was taken by Pakistan Cricket board to have its own franchise based T20 league. On 3 December 2015, the PCB unveiled the owners of five city-based franchises, representing Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Islamabad and Quetta.[4] The Karachi franchise was sold to the ARY Media Group for $26 million for a ten-year period making it the most expensive team in the tournament.[5]

Team history

2016 Season

Kings kicked off their campaign with an easy win against Lahore Qalandars at Dubai International Cricket Stadium due to Mohammad Amir's Hat-trick Kings restricted Qalandars on 125 for 8 and won the match by 7 Wickets.[6] They Played their second match against Quetta Gladiators and lost it by eight wickets. Kings, while batting first set 148 run target and failed to defend. Gladiators chased the target in 17th over.[7] The tournament did not went well for them as they lost six out of eight matches they played however finishing 4th and qualifying for play-offs above Lahore Qalandars with better head to head record. Shoaib Malik stepped down from captaincy of Karachi Kings a day before this match and Ravi Bopara was named his successor.[8] On 20 February 2016 they played a 2nd playoff - eliminator against Islamabad United. After losing the toss and sent into bat first by United they were restricted to the lowest score of the tournament (111). Ravi Bopara playing his first match as new Captain of the side was the highest run scorer he made 36 from 37. Disappointment followed them in the bowling as well as they could not stop United's batsmen scoring free runs and were easily crushed by nine wickets in the 15th over of the game only wicket-taker for the side was Sohail Khan as a result from this defeat they were eliminated from the tournament.[9]

Team identity

Name and logo

Team name and logo was revealed on 21 December 2015. logo features a lion with Karachi Kings written below in white and gold colours. At the logo ceremony Salman Iqbal the owner of the team said that the logo and the theme of the team represents the true spirit and resilience of Karachi.[10]

Jersey colours

The team's primary jersey colour is blue and gold. The jersey also incorporates the roaring lion logo in the center of the shirt and bottom of trousers.[11]

Theme song

Theme song of kings is Karachi Jeetay Gaa sung by Ali Azmat a Pakistani singer. The theme song launched on 8 Jan 2016 in an event held in National Stadium Karachi.[12]

Bahria Town the largest real-estate developers and Investors in Pakistan and the largest private housing society in Asia is the title sponsor for the franchise.[13] Besides Bahria Town other sponsors are Summit Bank, K-Electric, The Arkadians, Oye Hoye and Shield Corporation Ltd.ARY Digital,ARY Zindagi and ARY News are their official entertainment and news Partners respectively during 2016 PSL.Naya Nazimabad is their official main principle partner and will be their second Home Ground in PSL.[14]
