Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV is an upcoming 2016 computer-animated science fiction film based in the world and continuity of the 2016 role-playing video game Final Fantasy XV, which forms part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis subseries. The film is directed by Takeshi Nozue, who had co-directed the previous Final Fantasy CGI film, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (2005). Director of Final Fantasy XV, Hajime Tabata, will serve as producer, with a screenplay by Takashi Hasegawa, and music by John R. Graham.[2][3] The English release will feature the voices of Sean Bean as King Regis, Lena Headey as Lady Luna, and Aaron Paul as Nyx. Kingsglaive was made as an introduction for newcomers to the world of Final Fantasy, along with conveying some of Regis' backstory for Final Fantasy XV. It will be released in Japanese cinemas on July 9, 2016, with the English release to be available via stream and download.
Plot
Setting
Kingsglaive's story will run parallel to that of Final Fantasy XV's, and will tell the events occurring around Noctis's father King Regis and childhood friend Luna after Noctis escapes on a road trip with his friends.[4]
Story
"The magical kingdom of Lucis is home to the hallowed Crystal, but the menacing empire of Niflheim will stop at nothing to make it theirs. War has raged between the two for as long as most can remember. King Regis of Lucis commands an elite force of soldiers dubbed the Kingsglaive. Wielding their king’s magic, Nyx Ulric and his fellow glaives stand before the crown city of Insomnia, fighting to stay the inexorable advance of Niflheim’s imperial army. Before the overwhelming military might of the empire, King Regis can only salvage his kingdom by accepting an ultimatum—he must cede all lands outside the crown city, and see his son, Prince Noctis, wed to Lady Lunafreya, the former princess of Tenebrae now captive of Niflheim. As the war of wills rages, the machinations of Niflheim transform Insomnia into an awe-inspiring battleground, pulling Nyx into a struggle for the very survival of the kingdom."[2]

Production
Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV was officially announced during a special event on March 30, 2016 called "Uncovered: Final Fantasy XV". While similar in appearance to Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (2005), Kingsglaive had a different goal behind its development: while Advent Children was made for dedicated fans of Final Fantasy VII (1997), Kingsglaive was made as an introduction for newcomers to the world of Final Fantasy, along with conveying some of King Regis' backstory for Final Fantasy XV.[11][12][13] Kingsglaive is being produced by Hajime Tabata, the director of Final Fantasy XV. The film itself will be directed by Takeshi Nozue and written by Takashi Hasegawa. The original score will be composed by John R. Graham, while the main theme from Final Fantasy XV, composed by Yoko Shimomura, will also be included. The main staff are the same as those who developed Advent Children in 2005.[12][13] Kingsglaive began development in 2013.[12] In addition to the staff of Advent Children, Western companies in gaming and film production are involved: Digic Pictures, who had worked on the graphics for the Assassin's Creed series; and Image Engine, who had worked on multiple films including Jurassic World (2015) and the television series Game of Thrones.[11] A custom redesign of the Audi R8, acting as Regis' state vehicle, is featured in the film as part of a collaboration with its manufacturers.[14] Scenes shown within original trailers for Final Fantasy XV (from when it was called Final Fantasy Versus XIII and pre-cut trailers after its rename) have been re-purposed for Kingsglaive, with some being direct replicas.[15]
The English release of the film will feature voice performances from multiple well-known actors: Sean Bean portrays King Regis, Lena Headey voices Lunafreya, while Aaron Paul plays Nyx, a member of Regis' Kingsglaive guard and the film's main protagonist.[12][16] These voice actors, however, will not be reprising their roles in Final Fantasy XV due to budgetary constraints.[17][18] Nyx is an original character exclusive to Kingsglaive, designed as a repeatable character that would bring the game's lore and setting to a more comprehensible level.[19] Tabata said that King Regis was redesigned from how he originally appeared in Final Fantasy XV (and from when it was Versus XIII) to fit the film's vision and to facilitate the game's story; some other characters were redesigned for the same reasons. Regis's redesign is based on the likeness of British actor Jon Campling, who also did the motion-capture for the character.[20]
Release
Kingsglaive is set for release in Japanese cinemas on July 9, 2016. Tickets went on sale on April 23.[21] The English release will not be shown in theaters, but it will be available via stream and download before Final Fantasy XV's release.[17] It will also be included as a Blu-ray in the "Deluxe Edition" and "Ultimate Collector's Edition" of Final Fantasy XV, which will be released worldwide on September 30, 2016.[22]
