Kirindy Mitea National Park is a dry deciduous national Park in western Madagascar of about 12,000 hectacres. It is situated in the Menabe Region near Belo sur Mer and Morondava. It is surrounded by the Maharivo River and Lampaolo River.
Fauna
In this park are found 11 species of mammals of which 10 are endemic. Among them figures also the Madame Berthe's mouse lemur, the smallest primate in the world, that is only known from this park. Also the fossa, Madagascar's largest predator, and the lemurs only predator (apart from man). Other mammals endemic to the Menabe region include the giant jumping rat (Hypogeomys antimena) and the narrow-striped mongoose (Mungotictis decemlineata).
Furthermore, there are 47 species of birds (33 endemic) and 23 species of reptiles.
Kirindy supports eight species of lemur: [1]
- Madame Berthe’s mouse lemur - Microcebus berthae
- Red-fronted brown lemur – Eulemur rufifrons
- Pale fork-marked lemur – Phaner pallescens
- Grey mouse lemur – Microcebus murinus
- Coquerel's dwarf lemur – Mirza coquereli
- Fat-tailed dwarf lemur – Cheirogaleus medius
- Red-tailed sportive lemur – Lepilemur ruficaudatus
- Verreaux's sifaka – Propithecus verreauxi
Flora
185 species of plants can be found in the park, among them two species of baobab, as well as the Malagasy hazomalany tree (Hazomalania voyroni). Adansonia grandidieri can reach a height of 40 meters.
