L&T Technology Services, a subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro, is an engineering services company with headquarters in Vadodara, Gujarat, India. It offers design, development and testing services for the industrial products, medical devices, transportation, aerospace, telecom and process industries. As of 2016, L&T Technology Services employs over 10,000 staff[2] in 12 delivery centres, with operations in 35 locations in several countries. The company offers specialised services for mechanical engineering, embedded systems, engineering process services, and product lifecycle management (PLM), with proprietary products for engineering data analytics, power electronics, machine-to-machine (M2M), and the Internet of Things (IoT). The CEO and Managing Director is Dr. Keshab Panda.[3]

History

The company was founded in 2009 as L&T Integrated Engineering Services (IES),[4] a business Unit of Larsen & Toubro, by integrating the Embedded Systems, e Engineering Solutions and Global Engineering Services business units. In 2012 the Product Engineering Services Group of L&T Infotech was transferred into L&T IES.

In June 2014, L&T Technology Services purchased 74 percent of the equity capital of Thales Software India Pvt. Ltd.,[5] the Indian subsidiary of Thales, an aerospace, transportation and defence and security company. L&T Technology Services manages and oversees the management control, operations and delivery of services of the joint venture.[6]

In November 2014 L&T Technology Services acquired the engineering services vertical of Dell Inc..[7] The American division of Dell Engineering Services was moved into L&T Technology Services' North America Offsite Delivery centre in Peoria, Illinois.

The company’s delivery centres are based in the U.S. and India. In India, L&T Technology Services has campuses in Vadodara, Bengaluru, Mysore, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad, with engineering centres for embedded systems, plant and mechanical engineering. In the U.S. the company has delivery centres in New Jersey, California, Illinois, Iowa and Texas as well as several sales offices in the country. The company also has European sales office in London, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Munich and Milan. In Asia, it has offices in Japan, South Korea, Singapore and the UAE.

Cisco Systems and L&T Technology Services jointly launched a Global Internet of Things (IoT) Solutions Centre in the L&T Technology Services campus at Manyata Tech Park, Bangalore (India) in November 2015.[8] The company’s Bangalore campus also houses the India R&D Centre for Swedish commercial vehicles manufacturer Scania AB.[9] Its Vadodara base houses a tear down facility for its mechanical group. The company’s Mysore office provides testing and development centres and labs for embedded systems. Some of its larger centres for industrial products, medical, application engineering and automotive products operate in Mysore. In 2015, L&T Technology Services became a partner in NASSCOM’s centre of excellence for Internet of Things, for start-ups created in association with the DEITY and the Government of Karnataka.[10] L&T Tech Services, Internet of Things combined with the increasing digitalisation of business processes happening in the US and European countries, are seen as big business opportunities. This, coupled with a sizeable engineering talent pool, could act as differentiators in an area which is getting increasingly crowded. “When we talk about IoT, it is not just getting data from industrial machines and analysing it but also designing systems,” said Panda.

One of the other reasons that the company believes sets itself competitively the marketplace is the fact that technologies like IoT seem to be have graduated from information heads of companies to Board members. “They have bought into this concept as they see it in all walks of their lives,” said Panda.

Analysts seem to have bought into the capabilities of L&T Tech Services.

“The key differentiators for L&T Technology Services has been their strong core engineering culture and their investments in lab infrastructure for both embedded and mechanical capabilities. This has helped them build expertise in the verticals they operate in and come up with innovate solutions,” Sidhant Rastogi, Partner and Practice Head, Zinnov, wrote in a report few months ago.[11]

L&T Technology Services, a global R&D and Engineering Services company, has been rated as an expansive and established leader in the overall category by Zinnov’s ‘Global R&D Service Providers Ratings’ (GSPR) survey 2015. The survey also rated L&T Technology Services in the Leadership Zone for eight industry verticals – Automotive, Aerospace, Telecommunication, Energy & Utilities, Industrial Automation, Transport, Construction & Heavy Machinery and Medical industries – besides technology horizontals for Mechanical Engineering Services and Embedded Systems.[12]

Awards

L&T Technology Services has won the prestigious Dataquest Business Technology award in the Analytics category. The company won the award for successfully implementing a roadmap for data analytics across prominent business functions including financial MIS, operational MIS, talent analytics and strategic initiatives.[13]

L&T Technology Services wins the EMC Transformers Award 2015 under IT Transformation category for migration of IT Systems & Processes, declared on Oct. 15, 2015 during EMC Forum.[14]

L&T Technology Services has won the two coveted trophies at the international Golden Globe Awards by World HRD Congress held in Malaysia. The company was awarded the trophy in two categories 1) Best Organizational Development Program 2) Best Coaching Program in a ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur on April 11.[15]

"L&T Technology Services has signed an agreement to lease out space in Manyata Embassy Business Park in Bangalore. This is to consolidate within the location and have all employees in one building. It will also include future expansion," an L&T Technology Services spokesperson said. The firm also has expansion plans for other existing locations, including Mumbai and Chennai.[16]

L&T Technology Services has become a strategic partner in the IoT CoE for start-ups and is leading the initiative created by NASSCOM in association with the Indian government. In an interview with Businessworld L&T Technology Services has said it was hopeful that the government will increase spend on R&D in the years to come. This will enable it to partner with government organizations for solutions that adds value to different sectors. Another priority need is that government should allocate funds and encourage investments in newer services and technologies such as Big Data, Engineering Analytics and IoT. [17]
