History
Proenza Schouler /proʊˌɛnzə ˈskuːlər/ is a New York based womenswear and accessories brand founded in 2002 by designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez. The designers met while studying at Parsons School of Design, eventually collaborating on their senior thesis collection. That collection would become the first Proenza Schouler collection after it was bought in its entirety by retailer Barneys New York.
Proenza Schouler is a combination of the designers' mothers' maiden names; Proenza is thee maiden name of Hernandez's mother and Schouler is the maiden name of McCollough's mother.[1]
Proenza Schouler was awarded with the inaugural CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund award in 2004. Three years later, Proenza Schouler won its first of three CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year awards. It won CFDA Accessories Designer of the Year in 2009.
In 2008, Proenza Schouler introduced its first shoe collection, licensed through Giuseppe Zanotti, Vicini S.p.A. Later that year, Proenza Schouler launched its first handbag collection, including the PS1 Handbag. Initially conceived as an anti-it-bag, the PS1 has become a best-selling signature handbag.
In 2011, the company announced a partnership with a group of investors including Andrew Rosen, CEO of Theory, Inc., and John Howard, Chief Executive of Irving Place Capital. In 2012, the company signed a licensing agreement with Iris S.p.A. to produce and distribute footwear.
In 2015, Castanea Partners acquired a minority interest in Proenza Schouler and the brand signed a licensing agreement with L'Oréal for the creation and development of fine fragrances.
Proenza Schouler is sold in over 350 doors worldwide, including Barneys New York, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, Harvey Nichols, Le Bon Marché, and Lane Crawford.
