Thousands of individuals have suffered from Ebola virus disease (EVD), with some individuals notable as index cases or for having been doctors who treated other patients before becoming ill.

Ebola was discovered in 1976, with periodic outbreaks and cases noted since then.[1][1] (see List of Ebola outbreaks for an overview of outbreaks)
