List of European cities by population within city limits

This is a list of the largest cities in Europe by population within city limits. It deals exclusively with the areas within city administrative boundaries (municipalities) as opposed to urban areas or metropolitan areas, which are generally larger in terms of population than the main city.

The list includes cities geographically situated in Europe, using the conventional definition of its boundaries.

  1. Istanbul is a transcontinental city in Eurasia, with its commercial and historical centre and about two-thirds of the population lying on the European side, and about one-third living on the Asian side. The population figure refers to the entirety of Istanbul Province.
