List of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episodes
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, the first-spin off of Law & Order, is an American police procedural television series that focuses on crimes of sexual nature. While the victim is often murdered, this is not always the case, and victims often play prominent roles in episodes. The series frequently uses stories that are "ripped from the headlines" or based on real crimes. Such episodes take a real crime and fictionalize it by changing the details.[1] The series premiered on NBC on September 20, 1999, and started its seventeenth season on September 23, 2015.
Most episode titles of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit between seasons one and twelve are a single word or initialism. From season thirteen onward, the pattern changed to one in which episodes have a two-word title with the number of letters matching the season number. A possible exception to this was thought to be the November 2011 episode Lost Traveler, which has twelve letters as it was spelled by NBC. However, this was almost certainly a network mistake, since showrunner Warren Leight tweeted about the episode three times, using the spelling Lost Traveller every time.[2][3][4]
On February 5, 2015, the series was renewed for a seventeenth season by NBC.[5] Mariska Hargitay (Lieutenant Olivia Benson) had her contract renewed for season 17, as well as Ice-T (Det. Fin Tutuola).[6][7] The 17th season premiered on September 23, 2015.[8] On February 1, 2016, the series was renewed for an eighteenth season.[9]
As of May 4, 2016, 386 original episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit have aired, currently airing the seventeenth season.
