• A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck south of Panama on January 20 at a depth of 0.0 km.^[1]
• A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck southeast of Hokkaido, Japan on March 18 at a depth of 35.0 km.^[2]
• A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Atacama, Chile on March 19 at a depth of 0.0 km.^[3]

April–June

• A magnitude 7.5 earthquake followed shortly afterwards by a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Blagoevgrad Province, Bulgaria on April 4 at a depth of 0.0 km.^[4] There was some major damage reported.^[5][6]
• A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Chiayi County, Taiwan on April 24 at an unknown depth. Three people were killed, 10 were injured and 66 homes destroyed in Chiayi County.^[7]
• A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck south of the Kermadec Islands, New Zealand on May 1 at a depth of 0.0 km.^[8]
• A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Halmahera, Indonesia on May 1 at a depth of 0.0 km.^[9]
• A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the Sea of Japan on June 7 at a depth of 350.0 km.^[10]

• A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Central Alaska on August 27 at a depth of 0.0 km.^[20]
• A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Sichuan Province, China on August 30 at a depth of 0.0 km.^[21] There was around 400 deaths and major damage in the area.^[22]

• A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Costa Rica on December 20 at a depth of 0.0 km.^[26]
• A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the Izu Islands, Japan on December 27 at a depth of 100.0 km.^[27]
