MT Framework is a seventh generation game engine created by Capcom. MT is meant to stand for "Multi-Thread", "Meta Tools", and "Multi-Target". Originally meant to be an outside engine, but none matched their specific requirements in performance and flexibility. An update to the engine, MT Framework 2.0, was first introduced with Lost Planet 2 in 2010.[2]
Background and history
Capcom started working on MT Framework in September 2004. The project started with only one programmer, he was creating this engine based in Onimusha 3 engine. In 2005, more people started to join the project by upgrading the codes. The MT framework can create a motion blur using the multithreading techniques, they called it "2.5D motion blur". This technique is based on "NVIDIA OpenGL Shader Tricks" by Simon Green at the Game Developers Conference 2003. Therefore, the engine is able to use the full potential of the asynchronously multicore CPUs that are powering both of the Xbox 360 and the PS3.[3] Keiji Inafune mentioned in an interview with 1UP that the lead programmer for MT Framework designed the engine specifically for Dead Rising, Lost Planet, and Mega Man Legends 3, which Inafune has been hoping to make for several years.[4]
In Capcom's 2011 Annual Report, it was confirmed that 80% of MT Framework's development process is common between the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC platforms which reduced development costs. The report also detailed how it could reduce development time to a third and how the engine was extending platform compatibility to include Nintendo 3DS, Wii and iPhone.[1]
In an 2014 interview with Masaru Ijuin, an engineer behind MT Framework and an upcoming proprietary Capcom engine Panta Rhei, he detailed that despite plans to move to a new engine starting with deep down, Capcom plan to continue use for MT Framework for the seventh generation of consoles as well as MT Framework Mobile for handhelds and smartphones.[5] He stated that "creators will have to start back at square one when they learn how develop games using Panta Rhei" but that it would increase overall efficiency of development.
