"Make Them Gold" is a song by Scottish synthpop band Chvrches, and the fifth single from their second studio album, Every Open Eye (2015).[1][2] The song will be made available in digital download in May 2016 via Virgin and Goodbye Records.
Music and lyrics
"Make Them Gold" is three minutes and 51 seconds long (3:51). The song was written and composed by Chvrches. Prominent lyrics in the song include, "We will take the best parts of ourselves and make them gold". When asked about the song Iain Cook expressed - "We don't put the lyrics on until the song is nearly and a melody is in place. She (Mayberry) takes the demos away and gets ideas down, then when it comes to put it all together we sit down and refine it line by line and make it all fit together. I guess that's unusual, I know bands who are lyric-driven, but that's not how we work." Mayberry told NME that the keyboard part in the song reminded her of "the bit in The Goonies where they're cycling down the hill."[3]
Critical reception
The song received generally favourable reviews. James Rainis from 'Slant Magazine' said, "Their most uplifting, bombastic drum accents and chattering pads lending credence to a hook that would come off as tawdry if it weren't delivered with such power".[4] Sasha Geffen from 'Consequence of Sound' commented on the melody of the song and Mayberry's vocal approach, "It pairs a bombastic major chord progression with lines that border on redundancy, This song keeps Chvrches' tempos and their spirits up, but the affirmations smear together. The melodies which they’re set don’t lend much depth to the words, either; Mayberry’s voice is as polished and charistmatic as ever, but along with Iain Cook and Martin Doherty on synths, she keeps tracing square.".[5]
Music video
A music video for the song is yet to be released by Chvrches.[6]
Live performances
"Make Them Gold" was promoted by Chvrches in a number of live appearances, including at the Pitchfork festival[7][8][9] and the RBC Blues Festival[10]
