Painting Malaya Sadovaya street was painted in 1979 by the Russian artist Alexander Semionov (1922–1984). Author has depicted a view of the famous Malaya Sadovaya Street in rainy day of the end of the 1970s. This cityscape was painted in traditions of the Leningrad School and Soviet figurative painting of late Socialist realism with their typical synthesis of realistic and impressionistic traditions for create an image of modernity.
History
In the artistic heritage of Alexander Semionov this picture holds a special place. Created on the top of his artistic career, five years before death, it became one of his greatest works. In painting artist gives the image of one of the most beautiful streets in the city, as well as a romantic and extremely attractive image of the Leningrad of the late of 1970s at whole. In picture artist convincingly conveyed a sense of time and place, unhurried flow of Leningrad life.
For the first time this painting was exhibited in 1987 at the posthumous exhibition of works by Alexander Semionov in the Exhibition Halls of the Leningrad Union of Artists.[1] Then the painting was shown in the cities around the Leningrad region. In 1994 the work was exhibited at the Art Show Paintings of 1950-1980s by the Leningrad School Artist,[2] in Saint Petersburg in the Exhibition Halls of the Saint Petersburg Union of Artists. In 1996 the painting was exhibited at the Art Show Paintings of 1940-1990s from the Leningrad School, in Saint Petersburg in the Nikolai Nekrasov Memorial Museum.[3] The painting was also reproduced on the cover of the exhibition catalog of 1996 Art Show.[4][5]
