Marian High School is a private, Roman Catholic high school for girls in Bloomfield Township, Michigan in Metro Detroit.[2] It is located in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit. It enrolls grades 9 to 12, and has about 500 students[3] and 40 teachers.[4]

Background

Marian High School, founded in 1959, is sponsored by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Accredited by the North Central Association, the academic program provides college preparatory classes, honors classes, and Advanced Placement courses. Leadership and community service experiences are embedded in the life of the school.

The Mustangs are members of the Michigan High School Athletic Association. Marian High School is located next to Brother Rice High School.

Controversies and human rights issues

Marian High School has been involved in a two notable controversies involving LGBTQ rights in recent years.

Campus safety office Charlene Genther ("Mama G") was dismissed in late 2006 after publishing a book in which she admitted to being a lesbian.[5] Student protests were largely ignored by the school administration.

In 2014, lesbian science teacher Barbara Webb was fired in the midst of an untraditional pregnancy. After conceiving, Webb requested a leave of absence that would make her pregnancy less public. Instead she was reportedly dismissed for “lifestyle or actions directly contradictory to the Catholic faith”. Student and alumnae rallies in support of Webb were held near the Marian campus and many of the activists took to Facebook to coordinate and share letters of protest.[6] A Change.org letter in support of Webb received over 80,000 signatures. While the sisterhood associated with the school indirectly addressed the events surrounding Webb's firing in writing,[7] the school administration was largely unresponsive to public protests.

The school celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2009.[8]

Marian High School was Michigan's first high school to perform the award-winning musicals Curtains and Into the Woods.

Marian High School was honored for the last four years for its commitment to being environmentally friendly by obtaining both Michigan Green School status and Evergreen designation.

Marian offers a rich academic course load systematically organized to prepare these women of character for future academic endeavors. Marian offers a deep foundation for its students in mathematics, English, science, social studies, language, and theology.
