Mauldin High School (often referred to colloquially as "Mauldin High" or simply as "Mauldin", and often abbreviated as MHS) is a large high school in Mauldin, South Carolina, United States. It is the largest high school in Greenville County School District.

History

The idea of Mauldin High School comes from a former school that was built in 1927 on East Butler Road. This school was destroyed by a fire in 1935. In 1973, a new high school, which was the foundation of the modern high school, was built.[1]

Sports

Mauldin High School has several various sports teams in which the students can participate or join, including baseball, football, basketball, and volleyball. Mauldin High School's official mascot, both for sports and for the school itself, is a maverick bull. Mauldin's sports teams as a whole are referred to as the Mauldin Mavericks (or by the shortened and more colloquial form, "Mauldin Mavs"). Sometimes this title is given to the entirety of students enrolled in the school.

Incidents

Hair-on-fire incident

In early January 2013, a male student was convicted of lighting another student's hair on fire with a lighter. The boy was charged with third-degree assault, school disruption, and battery. He also received a 10-day suspension.[3][4]

Bomb threats

In late March 2015, there were three written bomb threats at Mauldin High School which caused everyone to have to exit the building and wait outside. On March 19, a suspect was detained for writing the threat. He was charged for both the threat itself and the disruption that the threat caused.[5][6]

Parking issues

In the past, there were issues in Mauldin with students of Mauldin High School illegally parking in parking lots surrounding the high school, especially at Ray W. Hopkins Mauldin Senior Center's parking lot, because of the inconvenience of purchasing a parking pass from the school. In September 2015, Mauldin's city council ratified a new parking decree which allowed police to more strictly enforce parking codes.[7]
