Ray W. Hopkins Mauldin Senior Center (often referred to as Ray Hopkins Senior Center or Mauldin Senior Center) is a senior center located in Mauldin, South Carolina, United States. Membership at the senior center is exclusively for individuals over the age of 54,[1] but there are several other organizations that have used the campus for other purposes.

History

The grounds that are now taken by the senior center were once a part of the property of Mauldin City Park. The city park was reduced by half its size after the senior center was built, and the park now lies behind the senior center.

Membership

People can only achieve a membership at the senior center if they are 55 years old or older, which is considered the age of a senior citizen by some. The senior center hosts a fitness room as well as scheduled exercise classes, which are both only accessible by members. The senior center also hosts occasional excursions for members.[1]

Alternative uses

Freedom Church, located in Greenville, holds services at the senior center[2] every Sunday.[3] These reservations were requested and gained in late 2015.[4]

Boy Scouts of America's Troop 707 of the Blue Ridge Council meets at the senior center every Tuesday on the first floor. There is also some history of Girl Scout recruitment activities at the senior center.[5]

On Election Day, the senior center is one of many polling places in Mauldin.[6]

Parking issues

In the past, there were issues in Mauldin with students of Mauldin High School, which is across the street from the senior center, illegally parking in parking lots surrounding the high school because of the inconvenience of purchasing a parking pass from the school. This concerned members of the senior center, as a majority of these illegally-parking students were parking at the senior center parking lot. In September 2015, Mauldin's city council ratified a new parking decree which allowed police to more strictly enforce parking codes.[7]
