With the formation of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation in the year 2007, many Panchayats in the outskirts of Hyderabad, including Meerpet were supposed to be a part of it. However, as there was an election held in 2005 and the newly elected representatives were reluctant to transfer their powers, it was decided that the merge would occur once their term is completed. As of December 2009 there was no resolution formed. There was a speculation going on that Meerpet may opt for its own Municipality as merging with the Greater Hyderabad would mean that there would be no more elected posts like Ward members etc.
On December 24, 2009, a relatively peaceful Meerpet saw protests in the wake of the Telangana movement. Tires were burnt and private vehicles were sent back stating they would be stoned if they moved further.
