Mendeleyevsk (Russian: Менделе́евск; Tatar: Cyrillic Менделеев, Latin Mendeleyev) is a town and the administrative center of Mendeleyevsky District in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia, located on the Toyma River, 238 kilometers (148 mi) east of Kazan. Population: 22,075 (2010 Census);[3] 22,027 (2002 Census);[6] 18,085 (1989 Census).[7]
History
The town was originally the village of Bonduga or Bondyug, and was the birthplace of Kapiton Ushkov. It grew into a town after Ushkov had established the Chemical Plant Karpov in 1868. The town was renamed Mendeleyevsk after Dmitri Mendeleev visited the factory there. The factory itself was later renamed after Lev Karpov.[8] It was granted town status in 1967.
Administrative and municipal status
Within the framework of administrative divisions, Mendeleyevsk serves as the administrative center of Mendeleyevsky District, to which it is directly subordinated.[1] As a municipal division, the town of Mendeleyevsk is incorporated within Mendeleyevsky Municipal District as Mendeleyevsk Urban Settlement.[2]
Transportation
Begishevo, the nearest airport, is located 50 kilometers (31 mi) south of Mendeleyevsk.
