The Metropolitan City of Palermo (Italian: Città metropolitana di Palermo) is a metropolitan city in Sicily, Italy. Its capital is the city of Palermo. It replaced the Province of Palermo and comprises the city of Palermo and other 82 municipalities (comuni).

History

It was first created by the reform of local authorities (Law 142/1990) and then established by the regional law 15 August 2015.[1] and will be officially operative between October and November 30.

North façade on the Tyrrhenian Sea, bordered to the west with the province of Trapani, on the south by the province of Agrigento and Caltanissetta province, to the east with the Metropolitan City of Messina and the province of Enna. It is part of the Metropolitan City also the island of Ustica.

Metropolitan City of Palermo is spread mainly in longitude, along the northern coast of Sicily: the main means of transport, therefore, is the metropolitan railway service that connects Palermo crossing the Tyrrhenian coast from Termini Imerese to the airport of Palermo-Punta Raisi ; Railway lines also exist for metropolitan intra shift: the railway line Palermo-Agrigento, which is spread to the hinterland, and the railway line Palermo-Trapani. There are, finally, various road routes linking all the countries of the hinterland to the capital.
