The Naples metropolitan area (Italian: Area metropolitana di Napoli) is a metropolitan area in Campania, Italy, centered on the city of Naples. With a population of around 4 million, it's the third most populous metropolitan area on the European part of Mediterranean coast (after Barcelona and Athens), and one of the biggest metropolises in Europe.

Overview

Naples urban area and metropolitan area is the second most populous in Italy, after Milan. The urban area (core of the metropolitan area) has a population of 3,020,000[2] being the 10th-most populous urban area in the European Union. According to European Spatial Planning Observation Network, Naples polycentric metropolitan area has a population of 3,714,000.[3] According to The Principal Agglomerations of the World - Population Statistics and Maps by Citypopulation.de, Naples urban agglomeration has a population of 4,150,000.[4] According to Associazione per lo sviluppo dell'industria nel Mezzogiorno (SVIMEZ), Naples metropolitan area has a population of 4,434,136 on area of 2,300 km².[5]

Composition

The Naples metropolitan area includes the whole metropolitan city of Naples, 35 municipalities in province of Caserta, 10 municipalities in province of Avellino and 34 municipalities in province of Salerno, in all 171 municipalities, Naples metropolitan area - SVIMEZ the most important of these by population are Salerno, Giugliano in Campania, Torre del Greco, Pozzuoli, Casoria e Caserta, as shows the next table.
