Millennium Tower is a 60 story, 685 ft (209 m) residential skyscraper currently under construction in Boston, Massachusetts.[3] Upon completion, the luxury high-rise will be the third tallest building in Boston, built at the site of the former flagship store for Filene's in Downtown Crossing. The property will feature 442 residences, a Roche Bros. grocery, and Class-A office space.[5] Occupancy is scheduled for Summer of 2016.
History
Millennium Tower and the Burnham Building occupy the space of the former flagship Filene's store. When Filene's closed, the building was put up for sale and was bought by Vornado Realty Trust of New York. Vornado teamed up with Gale International for a $700 million redevelopment of the Filene's site. The project consisted of a 39-story tower including a 280-room hotel, a 125-seat restaurant, 475,000 square feet (44,100 m2) of office space, 166 residential condos, 300,000 square feet (28,000 m2) of retail space, and an adjacent park.[6] However, when the project ran out of money, it left the Burnham building gutted and a massive hole where parts of Filenes that were built in the 1950s – 1970s once stood. The city of Boston eventually revoked the permit on the project.[7]
In 2012, Millennium Partners took over the task and won approval for 1.2 million square feet of commercial and residential space in two buildings. On April 13, 2013, major tenant Arnold Worldwide was signed to occupy a large part of the new building. With the agreement in place, construction resumed.[8] The building officially broke ground on September 17, 2013 with mayor Thomas M. Menino in attendance.[9] On April 26, 2014, 600 trucks poured 6,000 cubic yards of concrete into a slab for the new building, making it the largest pour in the city's history.[10] Tenants already planned for the building included Roche Bros supermarket.[11] In June 2015, Millennium Partners announced that Michelin-starred, James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Mina and renowned sushi chef Ken Tominaga will bring their lively izakaya and sushi bar concept, PABU, to Boston as part of the Millennium Tower Boston development.[12] As of August 2015 the tower is constructing 2 floors a week and is scheduled to top out on Thursday, September 17, 2015.
Two tenants have moved in at the base of the tower. Roche Brothers is located in the lower levels and Irish chain Primark opened its first US store at the site of the former Filene's.
