Mitchell Mustain (born February 27, 1988) is a former professional football and baseball player.

Football career

High school career

Mustain was highly recruited out of high school. He was named the High School Player of the year by PARADE (January 2006), 2005-2006 Gatorade National Player of the Year, and the 2005 USA Today National Player of the Year. Scout.com ranked him as the top high school recruit for the class of 2006.[1] After the University of Arkansas's decision to hire Mustain's then high school football head coach Gus Malzahn as an offensive coordinator, Mustain officially committed to the University of Arkansas. Malzahn's hire was widely viewed as an attempt to recruit Mustain.[2][3]

College career

University of Arkansas (2006)

In 2006, after entering in the fourth quarter of the home opener against the University of Southern California, Mustain started the next eight games for the University of Arkansas, but was replaced by Casey Dick later in the season, even though he won all eight starts. Mustain finished the season completing 69-for-132 passes for 894 yards, with 10 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.[4]

University of Southern California (2007–2010)

In 2007, Mustain transferred to the University of Southern California (USC).[5] Under NCAA transfer rules, Mustain sat out the 2007 season and served as the quarterback for the scout team. After regaining playing eligibility in 2008, he alternated between the second- and third-string quarterback positions behind starters Mark Sanchez and Matt Barkley.[6][7][8] At USC, Mustain completed 52-for-89 passes for 505 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.

Professional football and baseball careers

Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Mustain went undrafted in the 2011 NFL Draft, and signed a 10-day free agent contract with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League in June 2011. He was later released.[9]

Arena Football League

In September 2011, Mustain signed with the Arena Football League's (AFL) Georgia Force.[10] His professional football career since has been limited to the AFL.[11] In January 2013, Mustain signed with the AFL's San Jose SaberCats as a backup quarterback.[12] In January 2014, Mustain was traded to the San Antonio Talons.[13] After starting the first 3 games of the season for the Talons, Mustain was released in 2014.[14]

Taking a break from football, Mustain signed a minor league baseball contract with the Chicago White Sox's Bristol White Sox. Mustain made eleven appearances with Bristol before moving on to the Kannapolis Intimidators, where he pitched in eight games. Overall, he pitched in 19 games in 2012, going 2-2 with a 4.63 ERA, and one save.[15]
