Moana is an upcoming 2016 American 3D computer-animated musical fantasy adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and the 56th film in Disney's animated features canon. The film is being directed by Ron Clements and John Musker. Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson provide the lead voices. It is scheduled to be released by Walt Disney Pictures on November 23, 2016.

Synopsis

In ancient Oceania in the South Pacific, the young Moana is a born navigator who sets sail in search of a fabled island. During her journey, she teams up with her hero and legendary demi-god Maui.

Production

After directing The Princess and the Frog, Clements and Musker started working on an adaptation of Terry Pratchett's Mort,[3] but rights problems prevented them from continuing with the project.[4] To avoid similar problems, they pitched three new ideas, and in 2011 started developing the film based on an original idea.[4] In 2012, Clements and Musker went on research trips to Fiji, Samoa, and Tahiti to meet the people of the South Pacific and learn about their culture.[5]

Moana will be Clements and Musker's first mainly computer-animated film.[5][6] One of the reasons to use the computer animation was that the environment, including the ocean, benefited more from the CG instead of a two-dimensional technique.[7] They also found that the three-dimensional characteristic of computer animation is naturally good at generating sculpted faces of the people of the South Pacific.[8] Maui's tattoos will be hand-drawn.[9]

Taika Waititi was writing the script for the film.[10] Eric Goldberg worked on the animation.[11][12] The film will feature music by Opetaia Foaʻi, Mark Mancina, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.[13]

Pop star and Fifth Harmony's member Dinah Jane Hansen was an early contender for the role of Moana.[14] However, after the filmmakers auditioned hundreds of candidates,[5] it was eventually announced that the role would go to 14-year-old high school freshman Auliʻi Cravalho, who will voice the lead character of Moana Waialiki, a young girl who sets sail with Maui.[1][15]

Release

On October 20, 2014, Disney confirmed to release the film in late 2016,[16] hinting that it might be the November 23, 2016 spot set by Disney in March 2014 for an untitled film.[17] On November 10, Disney confirmed to release the film on November 23, 2016.[18]

The picture will be titled Vaiana in Spain, following a trademark conflict.[19] The picture will be titled Oceania in Italy, while the name of the protagonist will be Vaiana in lieu of Moana, probably to avoid confusion with an Italian porn star of the same name, Moana Pozzi.[20]
