MOKO Social Media is a multi-media platform developer, devoted to building social networks and providing tailored content for high value, niche user groups bonded by common interest: students, political supporters, active lifestyle participants and millennial women. MOKO has identified these groups as communities that need to engage regularly and efficiently, but were not being served by other media providers, and has captured them through the provision of highly relevant and exclusive content in a proprietary platform that allows the audience to consume and share content seamlessly across devices. MOKO then generates revenue from advertising, sponsorship, content syndication, social network distribution and other monetization of the platforms.
MOKO’s portfolio of products includes six standalone platforms and apps dedicated to targeted niche markets:
- Students: REC*IT, BigTeams powered by REC*IT, REC*IT FITNESS and Speakiesy
- Active Lifestyle: RunHaven
- Millennial Women: Tagroom
History
MOKO Social Media began in Australia in 2004 and listed on the Australian Securities Exchange in 2007 trading under the ticker MKB. MOKO Social Media Limited (formerly MOKO.mobi Limited and Loop Mobile Limited) was Founded by Chief Executive Officer Ian Rodwell who has over 20 years experience in multimedia, corporate and consumer design and has successfully managed multimillion-dollar projects across the globe for McKinsey, BMW, Unilever and MTV.[1] MOKO began as a company engaged in the development of proprietary mobile social community platforms and mobile content sales, and during its early years and as technology evolved, developed its proprietary platform through in-house development and by means of acquisition.[2] In 2012, MOKO Social Media made a strategic shift away from accessing a user base via third parties to providing customized mobile social platforms for tailored and niche audiences in the United States, launching its first product website, RunHaven.com, in April 2014.[3] In May 2014 BlueNationReview.com was launched, and in June 2014 MOKO Social Media listed on the Nasdaq under the ticker MOKO.[4] MOKO Social Media's first mobile app, REC*IT, was soft launched in September 2014.[5]
Products
REC*IT
REC*IT is a platform that enables U.S. university students to participate in, and manage, college intramural sports. REC*IT allows students to see what's on campus, register for sports, view schedules, create teams and communicate with team members while receiving real time updates via any Android or iOS mobile device.[6] REC*IT is the official mobile app of Intramural Leagues, the largest college sports data provider in the United States, and an agreement with Intramural Leagues grants MOKO exclusive access to provide REC*IT to more than 950 universities in the U.S. and Canada.[7] REC*IT is live in the Apple App Store for all Apple products and Google Play for Android users.
BigTeams powered by REC*IT
In April 2015, MOKO signed an exclusive agreement with Bigteams, the largest U.S. high school sports data provider, to develop and provide a high school version of REC*IT to more than 4,000 U.S. high schools.[8] The high school version of the mobile app, BigTeams powered by REC*IT, is scheduled for launch in the fall of 2015, giving students and parents a platform to check high school sporting schedules and results, communicate with team members and receive real-time school sporting updates through their mobile device.[9]
REC*IT Fitness
In February 2015, MOKO signed an exclusive agreement with Innosoft Fusion to extend the features of REC*IT from intramural sports into on-campus general fitness and recreational activities.[10] REC*IT FITNESS is scheduled for launch in the fall of 2015 and will provide the features of REC*IT to general class-style fitness activities on college campuses such as yoga and CrossFit.
Speakiesy
Speakiesy is a mobile application that allows U.S. college students to communicate and share information via a closed social network accessible only with a university specific ".edu" email address. Speakiesy provides students with a hybrid news-feed, photo sharing and short-form blog posting service that's exclusive to their individual campus, and that only students can see. Speakiesy is scheduled to launch fall 2015 and the deliberate design of a "closed circuit" app means that users can only engage within their own college community without interference from unwanted non-student body interactions.[1]
RunHaven
RunHaven is a web and mobile website community offering industry news including training tips, nutritional guidance, injury treatment and prevention, and product reviews and suggestions. RunHaven is one of the fastest-growing online media brands for health and fitness enthusiasts and has already grown to be one of the largest female running communities on Facebook.[1] RunHaven is available on desktop, iOS and Android devices[11] and has been co-developed by former professional road race Bill Reifsnyder.
Tagroom
Tagroom is a fun online community exploring creative ideas and shareable entertainment in categories like style, food, home, kids, and health. From inspirational DIY ideas through to topical news stories and genius life hacks, Tagroom connects millions of users around seriously interesting topics that aren’t so serious. Tagroom is a leading destination for creatively-minded millennial women and was acquired by MOKO Social Media on October 1, 2014.[12]
Blue Nation Review (formerly)
Blue Nation Review was MOKO's progressive-oriented political commentary product, but was sold to Media Matters for America founder David Brock on November 25, 2015.[13][14]
