Personal life
Rey is the youngest of four siblings born to a Filipino mother, the former Fatima Marbella, and a Bahraini Muslim father, Samier Al-Alawi. Due to her father's attitude problems, Rey's mother separated from her father soon after her mother gave birth to her then returned to Manila with Mona in 2004. Rey's mother left her three elder children with him and would not be returned by their father to her in Manila until 2006.[1]
Rey suffers from Type 1 diabetes, a disease she was diagnosed with in 2011, the year she started her career in showbusiness. She is the only one in her family who suffers from the illness. As a result, she has to maintain a strict daily regimen of insulin self-injections and avoiding foods and drinks rich in sugar and carbohydrates.[5]
Rey and her family are born-again Christians.[6] She also has an older sister named Maria, who auditioned for StarStruck in 2015 as Mariam Al-Alawi.
