Munna Bhai is a series of Bollywood films directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vinod Chopra Productions. The first film is Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003) and the second is Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006). The third installment of the franchise will be made once Sanjay Dutt is released from jail on 25 February 2016.[1][2][3]

Overview

Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003)

Main article: Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.

Murli Prasad Sharma, nicknamed "Munna Bhai" (literally "Brother Munna") is a crime don who decides to go to a medical college to obtain an M.B.B.S. degree. He learns to help people using unorthodox techniques, and by the end of the film he has married another doctor and founded a hospital together with her.

Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006)

Main article: Lage Raho Munna Bhai

In the second instalment of the series, Munna Bhai poses as a professor of history in order to meet with a radio jockey whose voice he has fallen in love with. She asks him to give a lecture on Mahatma Gandhi, and as a result, he becomes a proponent of Gandhism.

Proposed sequel

On 21 March 2013, India's Supreme Court upheld Sanjay Dutt's conviction of illegal possession of arms relating to the 1993 Mumbai blasts case and sentenced him to 5 years imprisonment. Thus, Hirani has shelved a proposed sequel to the earlier films, Munna Bhai Chale Amerika. He will instead develop a third installment to the Munna Bhai series with a different storyline, after Dutt is released from prison.[4] He said that he had 5 incomplete scripts lying with him. Ranbir Kapoor will be playing a version of Munna while he is 18 – 55 years old.
