National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) (formerly known as National Institute for Training in Industrial Engineering) is one of the top B-Schools in India, located in Powai near Vihar Lake in Mumbai, India.[1] The premier institute, which started off as an Industrial Engineering institute, now offers full-time Fellow Programme in Management/ Fellow Programme in Industrial Engineering, Post Graduate programs in Industrial Engineering, Industrial Management, Industrial Safety And Environmental Management, Manufacturing Management and Project Management. It has been recognized as one of the 15 Centres of Excellence along with the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), six Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India.[2] It is renowned as the top Indian B school for supply chain management.[3]
History
National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) was established by the Government of India in 1963 with the assistance of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through the International Labour Organization (ILO) to create skilled professionals. It was funded by the Government of India and registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. NITIE, an autonomous body, is governed by a Board of Governors comprising eminent personalities from the government, industry and academia.[4]
The prestigious institute was formerly known as the 'National Institute of Training in Industrial Engineering'. Later, the word 'Training' was removed and was rechristened 'National Institute of Industrial Engineering'. The institute, in its initial days, was spread across the country with knowledge centres situated in Hyderabad, Chennai and Delhi. Gradually, during the late 1980s, all of these nodal centres were shut down and a single centre was formed, which is currently located at Mumbai. The institute is also engaged in applied research and offers professional consultancy services in various facets of management.[5]
Academic programmes
The Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering (PGDIE) is a two-year full-time course started in 1971. The course allows students to select from functional areas like Marketing, SCM, Operations, Finance, Systems or Human Resources. This course admits students through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering examination conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology(IITs) and IISc, Bangalore.
The Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Management (PGDIM) has been modeled along the lines of the General Management Program at the MIT Sloan School of Management. This course admits students through the Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management. The course allows students to select from functional areas like Marketing, Finance, Supply Chain, IT or Human Resources. The Course is accredited as MBA equivalent by UGC (University Grants Commission).
The Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Safety and Environmental Management (PGDISEM) teaches students the practices of Environment,Safety,Sustainability and Energy management along with core concepts of Operations management. This program equips first class engineers with the much needed techno-managerial skills for managing a just business in today's world. The admission for this course too is through the CAT. The Course is accredited as MBA equivalent by UGC (University Grants Commission)
Post Graduate Diploma in Manufacturing Management (PGDMM) PGDMM is a unique course & its curriculum has been structured to cater to the specific needs of the manufacturing industry. The program would provide a multidisciplinary approach to facilitate students in grasping the need of different functions like "procurement", "marketing" and "supply chain" in developing the manufacturing strategy and exploiting the manufacturing capability for achieving business competitiveness.
Post Graduate Diploma in Project Management (PGDPM) The field of project management is very interesting and intellectually alive, as judged by the number of research and practitioner conferences being conducted across the globe. The discipline has grown over the years and further needs to develop in relation to the developing world of practice. The current theories, concepts and methodologies underpinning project management research could be enriched and extended to enhance the relevance of the knowledge created in the research process for practical action in project environments.
All the above courses are approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE).
Admission Procedure of NITIE Mumbai
One needs to be a first class engineer (as per his/her university rules) or should have scored at least 60% in engineering (if university has no criteria to offer division) to be eligible to apply for NITIE. 5% relaxation in engineering marks for eligibility is provided to SC and ST Category students.
NITIE accepts GATE score for shortlisting of candidates for PGDMM and PGDIE. GATE score from all the branches of engineering is considered for shortlisting. NITIE has also established an Advanced Centre of Excellence in Operations and Manufacturing Management that is equipped with ERP/MRP-II, CAD/CAM, Pro-engineer, EDM and QUEST software.
Each quarter, NITIE publishes a professional journal-UDYOG PRAGATI. This publication elucidates new developments in industrial engineering and allied fields.
Social Events & Activities
NITIE is known for its popular pedagogy of learning by active selling under the brandname "Mandi". Mandi is an annual event [6] where toys made by NGOs are sold by the students in a street selling exercise and the proceedings are used to educate the children. Mandi is very successful event and also pioneers the concept of 'learning by selling' in post graduate studies. The concept has been replicated by other management institutes across the country such as IIM Bangalore [7]
