NXT TakeOver: Fatal 4-Way, was a major professional wrestling event produced by WWE, under their NXT brand and was broadcast live on the WWE Network, available to subscribers. NXT TakeOver took place on September 11, 2014 at NXT's "home" arena, Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida and featured six matches as part of the main broadcast and one match prior to the televised portion of the show. The show was the second show in the "NXT TakeOver" series of Network exclusive shows. Recently hired Japanese wrestler Kenta made his debut at the show, changing his ring name to "Hideo Itami". The main event of the show was an eponymous Fatal 4-Way match where NXT Champion Adrian Neville defended the championship against Sami Zayn, Tyler Breeze and Tyson Kidd. The show also featured Charlotte defending the NXT Women's Championship against Bayley as well as NXT Tag Team Champions The Ascension (Konnor and Viktor) defended against #1 contenders The Lucha Dragons (Kalisto and Sin Cara).

Production

Background

The NXT TakeOver series of professional wrestling shows started on May 29, 2014 as the WWE developmental league WWE NXT held their second ever WWE Network exclusive live broadcast billed as NXT TakeOver.[1] With the announcement of NXT TakeOver: Fatal 4-Way, NXT used the "NXT TakeOVer" name as the brand used by NXT and WWE for all of their NXT live specials held on the WWE Network.[2]

Storylines

The NXT TakeOver: Fatal 4-Way show featured professional wrestling matches involving different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds and storylines that played out on the NXT television program prior to the show. Wrestlers portrayed faces (those who portray the "good guys") or heels (the "bad guys") as they followed a series of events that built tension and culminated in a match or a series of matches.[3][4]

On February 27, 2014, Adrian Neville defeated Bo Dallas to win the NXT Championship in the main event of NXT Arrival.[5] On the May 8 episode of NXT, Sami Zayn, Tyson Kidd and Tyler Breeze all participated in a 20-man battle royal where the winner would get a match for the NXT Championship. The match ended in a three way tie between Zayn, Kidd and Breeze.[6] As a result, the three faced off a week later in a triple-threat match, where Kidd won to become #1 contender.[7] At NXT TakeOver, Adrian Neville successfully defended the championship against Tyson Kidd, while Tyler Breeze cheated his way to victory over Sami Zayn to become the number one contender.[8] Following TakeOver Neville, Zayn, Breeze and Tyson Kidd became involved in a four way feud, that led to a four way championship match in the main event of NXT TakeOver: Fatal 4-Way.[9]

In August/September 2013 Bayley started to team with Charlotte on a regular basis, but they were almost immediately targeted by the BFFs ("Beautiful Fierce Females", Summer Rae and Sasha Banks) as they attempted to convince Bayley to join their side.[10] After building up the storyline to see if Bayley would indeed turn on Charlotte, it ended up with Charlotte attacking Bayley during a match, promptly joining the BFFs instead.[11] On May 1, 2014, Bayley failed to advance in a tournament for the vacant NXT Women's Championship after losing to Banks in the first round.[12] On June 12, Bayley earned a pinfall over the new NXT Women's Champion Charlotte in a six-woman tag team match.[13] In August, 2014 Bayley defeated Sasha Banks to become the #1 contender for the Women's championship held by Charlotte.

Event

The commentators were Tom Phillips, Byron Saxton and Renee Young, while the pre-show panel consisted of Jason Albert, Alex Riley and Renee Young.[2] Before the match began, JoJo performed the national anthem in the beginning of the show. Kenta made his first NXT appearance at TakeOver, where he was introduced by NXT General manager William Regal. During his introduction Kenta announced that he would be known as "Hideo Itami" from that point on.[14] Moments later he was attacked by The Ascension (Konnor and Viktor) who were still angry over losing the NXT Tag Team Championship earlier in the night.[15]
