New Schubert Edition

Neue Schubert-Ausgabe
Portrait of Franz Schubert by Franz Eybl (1827)

The New Schubert Edition (German: Neue Schubert-Ausgabe), abbreviated as NSE (German: NSA), or NGA (for Neue Gesamt-Ausgabe, new complete edition, in order to distinguish it from the 19th century Alte Gesamt-Ausgabe, AGA) is the second complete works edition of the music of Franz Schubert. A longer and more formal title for the edition is Franz Schubert: Neue Ausgabe sämtlicher Werke (Franz Schubert: New Edition of the Complete Works).

Publication

The Neue Schubert-Ausgabe is published by Bärenreiter (Kassel). It proposes eighty-three volumes, in eight series. Publication of all volumes has been scheduled to conclude in 2016. Plans for this edition began as early as 1963, with the foundation of the International Schubert Society, headquartered at the University of Tübingen, Germany.

The publication contains a new edition of the Deutsch catalogue (1978, Series VIII vol. 4, first German-language version of the catalogue).

The edition contains in eight series 83 music volumes (Notenbände), critical reports (Kritische Berichte) and supplementing volumes (Supplementbände).
