North Tyneside General Hospital is part of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. It is closely associated with Wansbeck General Hospital in Ashington. Located on Rake Lane, near New York in North Shields, England, it is the main hospital serving the North Tyneside area.

History

It was built between 1984 and 1996 with gradual extensions, and replaced several other hospitals including the Tynemouth Infirmary and Preston Hospital. It is often referred to locally as the Rake Lane Hospital.

It serves a population of about 250,000 in North Tyneside and Northumberland.

Patients requiring maxillofacial, burn and plastic specialist surgery are generally referred to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne. Patients requiring neuro-surgical care are usually referred to Newcastle General Hospital. Patients requiring Urology and ENT specialities are generally referred to the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.
