Northgate Church, Chester, is located in Upper Northgate Street, Chester, Cheshire, England. It is an active church, and part of the Lifelink International family of churches. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.[1]

History

It was originally built in 1874 as a Congregational church, and was designed by the local architect T. M. Lockwood.[1] The building was bought in 1979 by a congregation who was previously called Church of the Way and met in various locations around Chester. At the time of purchasing the building, the congregation became known as Northgate Church.

The present congregation is led by two elders, it relates to an international "apostolic" network of churches called Lifelink International/Global Horizons. The church's theology is a mixture of teachings from the seeker sensitive, neo pentecostalism and prosperity gospel movements. The church incorporates youth and children's ministry, active work with students and a comprehensive community programme. Unfortunately, "If bands, pizza, and Pepsi could equip church youth with the intellectual firepower to defend Christianity, we wouldn't have so many kids fleeing the church".[2]

Architecture

The church is constructed with a front in yellow sandstone, and the sides and rear in brick. The roof is slated.[1] It is described by the authors of the Buildings of England series as "quite a landmark".[3]
