Obaidul Quader (born January 1, 1952) is a politician of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. He has been the Minister of Road Transport and Bridges and a member of parliament of Bangladesh since 2008.[1] He formally served as the State Minister of Youth, Sports and Cultural Affairs from 1996 to 2001.
Early Life and Education
Quader was born in Bara Rajapur village, Companiganj Upazila, Noakhali district. His parents were Mosharrof Hussain and Fazilatunessa. Quader completed his matriculation with a first division from Basurhat A. H. C. Government High School. He completed his HSC from Noakhali Government College with a place in the merit list. He obtained a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Dhaka. Qader's wife Isratunnesa is a lawyer.[2]
Career
Quader worked as the assistant editor of the newspaper in Daily Banglar Bani for a long time. He has authored nine books.
Political career
Qader was involved in politics since his college life. In 1966, he played an active role during the Six point movement. He was also active in the Mass Upsurge and the Eleven-Point Movement in 1969. He joined the Liberation War of Bangladesh as the commander of Companigonj Thana Mujib Forces. After 1975, Qader was imprisoned for two and a half years. While in prison, he was elected President of the central committee of Bangladesh Chhatra League and he remained so for two consecutive terms. Obaidul Quader was elected as a Member of Parliament from the constituency Noakhali-5 in the Parliamentary elections of June 12, 1996. He was appointed the State Minister of Youth, Sports and Cultural Affairs and worked till July 15, 2001. From the Three-year Council of 2002 to the Council session held in 2009, he executed his responsibility as the first Senior Joint General Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League. He was arrested on March 9, 2007 by the Caretaker government of Bangladesh and remained in prison for 17 months and 26 days before he was finally released on bail on September 5, 2008.
