The P'yŏngbu Line is an electrified standard-gauge trunk line of the North Korean State Railway running from P'yŏngyang to Kaesŏng.[2]

The line is the southern continuation of the P'yŏngŭi Line. It theoretically connects P'yŏngyang to Busan in South Korea but, in reality, it ends at Kaesŏng because of the Korean Demilitarized Zone.

History

The line was originally a part of the Kyŏngŭi Line and opened in 1905. During the period of Japanese rule international trains were running on the railway from Pusan to Fungtian (Shenyang). After the independence of Korea the Kyŏngŭi Line was divided into three sections and the railway between Sariwŏn Station and the 38th parallel was closed by the military of the Soviet Union.[2][3] Before the Korean War the passenger trains of South Korea were running from Yongsan to T'osŏng (Kaep'ung).[3] After the end of the war the southern terminus of the line was changed to the Kaesŏng Station.[2]

In 2007 the section Kaesŏng–Dorasan was reopened for the connection to South Korea, and for a number of years freight trains from the south to the Kaesŏng Industrial District and passenger trains to the Mount Kumgang Tourist Region were operated, but these have since been suspended. The first of these freight trains ran on 11 December 2007, carrying construction materials from Munsan in the South to Kaesong, and footwear and clothing on the return trip to the South.[4]

Services

The following passenger trains are known to operate on the North Korean section of the line:[2]
