List of Kid Icarus characters
The following is a list of characters in the Kid Icarus franchise.
Main characters
Pit
Pit is the main character in the Kid Icarus franchise.
In the first Kid Icarus video game, he was a prisoner of the Underworld when Palutena contacted him. After escaping from the Underworld, Pit went on a quest to save all of Angel Land from Medusa: Goddess of Darkness by seeking out the Three Sacred Treasures. Pit succeeds in his quest by defeating Medusa and freeing Palutena.
In Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters, Pit is summoned by Palutena when all of Angel Land is threatened by the demon Orcus. Pit once again searches for the Three Sacred Treasures in order to defeat Orcus.
In Kid Icarus: Uprising, Pit once again faces off against Medusa and eventually discovers that she was just a pawn of Hades.
Pit is also one of the supporting characters in Captain N: The Game Master where he was referred to as Kid Icarus and has the habit of adding "-icus" to the end of some of his words.
Pit is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.
Pit is voiced by Alessandro Juliani in Captain N: The Game Master, Lani Minella in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and by Anthony Del Rio in Kid Icarus: Uprising and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.
Palutena
Palutena is the Goddess of Light, the rightful ruler of Skyworld, and the eponymous character of the Kid Icarus franchise in Japan (光神話 パルテナの鏡 Hikari Shinwa Parutena no Kagami, translated as "Light Mythology: Palutena's Mirror"). She is kind-hearted, benevolent and sometimes playful and mischievous, as shown in her conversations with her angel companion, Pit. In the storyline of the first Kid Icarus, Palutena and Medusa were the goddesses of light and darkness respectively, and together they ruled over a realm known as Angel Land. Palutena cared for and loved humanity, but her dark counterpart, Medusa, loathed humans, and took great pleasure in turning them into stone, as well as poisoning their crops. Angered by this, Palutena cursed Medusa by transforming her into a hideous monster and banshined her to the underworld. But unbeknownst to Palutena, Medusa would ally with the inhabitants of the Underworld, and plot her revenge against her light counterpart and her army. But when Palutena is captured by Medusa and the Underworld Army, she sends out a distress call to her angelic captain of her guard, Pit, to rescue her and defeat Medusa. Palutena managed to deliver her sacred bow to her captain, allowing Pit to escape the Underworld Dungeon, who proceeded to work his way from the Underworld all the way up to the Palace in the Sky, and, using the Three Sacred Treasures he collected along the way, destroyed the goddess of darkness and rescued Palutena. Palutena reappears in the Game Boy sequel Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters, where she has a premonition that the demon Orcos will arrive and destroy Angel Land. She commands Pit to enter a special training to prove his worth of using the Three Sacred Treasures in order to defeat Orcos.
Much like Pit, Palutena was given a radical redesign in the 2008 crossover fighting game Super Smash Bros. Brawl. She makes two appearances, one in the game's story mode, The Subspace Emissary, where she gives Pit a new bow (dubbed the "Palutena Bow") in order to assist in the fight against the Subspace Army, and in Pit's Final Smash, dubbed "Palutena's Army" where she sends her Centurions to help Pit attack his opponents. In Kid Icarus: Uprising, Palutena's role was greatly expanded into Pit's most notable ally, always communicating with him throughout the game and providing support, such as the Power of Flight, an ability of hers that keeps Pit airborne for five minutes. Within the storyline, 25 years after the events of the first game, Palutena sends Pit out to battle the recently resurrected Medusa and the Underworld Army. Before striking Medusa dead on, Palutena directs Pit to various Underworld locations and fortresses, where he defeats all the top Underworld commanders, and together they reclaim the long lost Three Sacred Treasures from a crew of Space Pirates. After striking Medusa's fortress and defeating her once more, Pit and Palutena discover that Medusa was only a mere pawn to the true leader of the Underworld and the real villain of the game, Hades. From there, they face Hades and his army, as well as new enemies that arise, such as the Goddess of Nature, Viridi, an alien race known as the Aurum, and a demonic spirit known as the Chaos Kin, which takes control of Palutena at some point, before being destroyed by Pit and Dark Pit. In the final battle against Hades, Palutena charges the power of the remnants of the Great Sacred Treasure's main cannon, allowing Pit to destroy the Lord of the Underworld once and for all.
On June 10, 2014, Palutena was confirmed to be a playable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. She uses the powers she grants Pit usage of in Uprising for her moveset, and is the only character, aside from the Mii Fighters, to feature her own set of fully unique custom special moves. Along with Viridi, she also appears in the special Palutena's Guidance feature, which can be activated by Pit on the Palutena's Temple stage in the Wii U version of the game. It functions similarly to Snake's Codec Conversations in Brawl, where Palutena and Viridi give advice to Pit on how to combat the other fighters in the game.
She is voiced by Ali Hillis in Kid Icarus: Uprising and by Brandy Kopp[1] in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.
Dark Pit
Dark Pit is an anti-hero clone of Pit who debuts in Kid Icarus: Uprising. He is, essentially, a potential representation of Pit's repressed feelings. Whereas Pit is fiercely loyal to Palutena and the gods, Dark Pit is only loyal to himself and detests working for others. Using the Mirror of Truth, Pandora created Dark Pit to combat Pit for her. But as the Mirror was creating the copy, Pit destroyed it, resulting in Dark Pit being born as a flawed clone. As such, he betrays Pandora and ultimately indirectly assists Pit in taking down the Goddess of Calamity, whom he steals the powers of after destroying her, granting him unlimited flight. Palutena sends Pit to eliminate Dark Pit, believing him to be a threat, but in amidst of this, Dark Pit attempts to destroy Pit as well, convinced that he himself is the true Pit. Later on in the game's story, when Palutena's soul is possessed by the evil entity known as the Chaos Kin, Dark Pit eventually accepts that he and Pit are one and the same, and "two sides of the same coin" and together, along with the help of Viridi, they rescue Palutena and seemingly destroy the Chaos Kin in its dimension, the Chaos Vortex, but not before the monster's remains spring up and toss Dark Pit and itself into the abyss, in an attempt to devour his soul. With Viridi's help, Pit nearly sacrifices himself to save his opposite, resulting in his wings being burned to a crisp. In a desperate attempt to save her angel, Palutena sends Dark Pit to the City of Souls in the Underworld to reach the Rewind Spring, a mystical spring that can be used to revert the effects of time on a living being. When Dark Pit arrives, the essence of Pandora emerges from his wings and dives into the spring to rebuild herself, and fights Dark Pit again. Dark Pit emerges victorious and restores Pit's wings by dipping him into the Rewind Spring, saving his life. His last major role in the game is rescuing Pit from the insides of Hades with the help of the Lightning Chariot, and he is also seen flying with Pit in the ending of the game, after the Lord of the Underworld's defeat.
Dark Pit also appears as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U with a similar set of moves to that of Pit, with minor differences such as wielding the Electroshock Arm, firing slightly stronger arrows, and featuring a different Final Smash that involves the use of the Dark Pit staff.
Like Pit, Dark Pit is voiced by Antony Del Rio.
Viridi
Viridi is the Goddess of Nature who debuted in Kid Icarus: Uprising, a sarcastic girl who commands the Forces of Nature army. Viridi has personal issues with the humans as she believes that they have corrupted the natural order. Though initially an antagonist, Viridi eventually warms up to Pit and becomes an ally taking over Palutena's role when she is possessed by the Chaos Kin. She further assists by helping Palutena guide Dark Pit to the Rewind Spring to save Pit's life when he is near death, distracts Hades with her Forces when he swallowed Pit, and finally grants Pit the Power of Flight during the final battle against Hades, so Palutena can concentrate on channelling divine energy into the cannon of the Great Sacred Treasure.
Viridi makes two cameo appearances in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. In the 3DS version, she appears in the background of the Reset Bomb Forest stage, where she is seen dropping a Reset Bomb onto the human armies, which results in the stage radically transforming. Viridi is also apart of the Palutena's Guidance feature in the Wii U version of the game, exchanging humorous combat advice about the other fighters to Pit.
She is voiced by Hynden Walch.
Medusa
Medusa is the Goddess of Darkness, the ruler of the Underworld, and the primary antagonist of the first game. While Palutena likes mankind, Medusa hated them and made chaos to them like drying out their crops and turning them to stone. Palutena turned Medusa into a snake-haired monster and banished her to the Underworld. Medusa vowed to take over Angel Land and overthrow Palutena. Medusa gathered the Underworld Army and led them in a surprise attack on Palutena's army. After imprisoning Palutena, Medusa gave the Three Sacred Treasures to her most powerful followers. After escaping from the Underworld, Pit went on a quest to find the Three Sacred Treasures which he used to defeat Medusa.
In Kid Icarus: Uprising, taking place twenty-five years after her defeat, Medusa was resurrected by Hades and reassembles the Underworld Army to take revenge on Pit and Palutena. After Pit defeated Medusa, Hades appeared and revealed to Pit that he was the one who resurrected Medusa. When it comes to Pit's final battle with Hades, Medusa is revived again and intervenes during the battle by delivering a punch to Hades strong enough to decapitate him, stating that she will not be Hades' puppet anymore, before being finally killed by Hades.
Medusa made an appearance in the Captain N: The Game Master episode "Mega Trouble for Megaland." She was seen guarding the Three Sacred Treasures on Mount Icarus. Her design is a mix between her human and monster forms, and she has a beautiful voice to trick her victims into a false sense of safety. This ability worked on the easily fooled Simon Belmont, although Medusa was ultimately defeated by accidentally looking into the Mirror Shield and turning herself into stone.
She is voiced by Cree Summer in Kid Icarus: Uprising.
Hades
Hades is the God of the Underworld who is the primary antagonist of Kid Icarus: Uprising, having resurrected Medusa and orchestrated various events for his ultimate scheme to absorb the souls of the departed to increase his power. Pit later fights Hades in the final battle and manages to vaporize him. Following the credits, Hades' disembodied voice states to the player that he might find a way to resurrect himself for the next game within 25 years.
He is voiced by S. Scott Bullock.
