Park Soo-young (born September 3, 1996),[1][5] commonly known by her stage name Joy, is a South Korean singer and entertainer. She is a member of K-pop girl group Red Velvet.[6]
Early life
As a child, Joy was heavily interested in trot music.[7] In grade school, she performed K-rock band Cherry Filter's Ori Nalda (Korean RR, "Flying Duck") which began her aspiration to become a singer.[8]
In 2012, she auditioned and was cast by S.M. Entertainment at the S.M. Global Audition in Seoul. While training for two years, she was given a stage name by a vocal coach who derived "Joy" from its literal English meaning[1] to represent her usual cheerful disposition. Joy agreed to the name for similar reasons, claiming, "Giving 'Joy' to others is the greatest goal I want to achieve."[9]
Career
Red Velvet
Joy was formally introduced as the fourth member of Red Velvet on July 29, 2014, serving as the group's lead rapper and supporting vocalist. The group made their music debut with the digital single "Happiness" on August 1, 2014.
Since debut, Red Velvet has experienced notable success and recognition.[10][11][12] After releasing two mediocre-success singles in 2014, their follow-up extended play, studio album, and four singles in 2015 have accumulated over 100,000 album sales and 3.2 million downloads according to Gaon. Red Velvet's Ice Cream Cake debuted at No. 1 on South Korea's Gaon Weekly Albums chart[13] and achieved consecutive number-one wins on Show! Music Core and Inkigayo. The album would go on to become the best selling album by a girl group in South Korea on the Hanteo Chart for the first half of 2015.[14] A few months later, their full-length album The Red won 5 music show awards and topped the Billboard World Albums Chart.[15] The group has since received two accolades for choreography which include Best Dance – Female, Best Dance Performance – Female Group and three new artist awards.[16][17]
Solo activities
In 2015, Joy ignited public interest by joining the fourth season of reality show We Got Married, where she appeared with BtoB member Yook Sung-jae.[18] She received significant recognition for her participation in the popular TV program and featured in her first solo pictorial in Korean fashion magazine CéCi, concurrent to modeling for Etude House cosmetics.[19] At the 2015 MBC Entertainment Awards held on December 29, 2015, Joy shared a win with Yook for the Best Couple Award and won the 2015 New Star Award.[20][21]
Following Red Velvet's promotions for their second mini album The Velvet in March 2016, Joy released a duet with Yook entitled Young Love on April 16, 2016.[22] The song debuted at number 52 on the Gaon Weekly Chart.[23] The same month, SM Town issued an official photo series entitled Enjoy your Monday with Joy. It is released once a week via SM Town Now and Vyrl mobile applications.[24][25]
Personal life
Joy graduated from School of Performing Arts Seoul's Program of Practical Music in February 2015.[26] She has two younger sisters.[27]
