Passengers is an upcoming American science fiction film directed by Morten Tyldum and written by Jon Spaihts. The film stars Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence. The film is set to be released by Columbia Pictures on December 21, 2016.
Plot
The spaceship, Starship Avalon, on its 120-year voyage to a distant colony planet known as the "Homestead Colony" and transporting 5,259 people has a malfunction in two of its sleep chambers. As a result, two hibernation pods open prematurely and the two people that awoke are stranded on the spaceship, still 90 years from their destination.[2][3]
Cast
- Chris Pratt as Jim Preston, a mechanic who wants to get off an Earth that no longer seems to value a guy who works with his hands.[2] Pratt described his character as "a mechanic type of guy who fixes things and uses his hands. In the world that they live in, he has become obsolete, and he travels to a distant planet".[4]
- Jennifer Lawrence as Aurora Dunn, a writer from New York, who wants to tell the story of space travel.[2]

Production
The original script for Passengers written by Jon Spaihts had been floating around Hollywood for years.[1] Brian Kirk was originally scheduled to make his feature directional debut with the film with Keanu Reeves at the lead[5] and Wayfare Entertainment financing and producing the film.[6] On December 5, 2014, it was announced that Sony Pictures Entertainment had won the auction to take the rights to the film.[7] On January 27, 2015, it was announced that Sony was in early talks with The Imitation Game's director Morten Tyldum to direct the film.[8] On February 6, first Variety reported that Jennifer Lawrence was in early talks to join the film,[9] later the same day TheWrap also reported that Chris Pratt was in talks too, to star in the film.[10] On July 17, 2015, Michael Sheen joined the cast of the film to play the robot traveling along with Pratt's and Lawrence's characters.[11] On August 5, 2015, Laurence Fishburne was in talks to join the film.[12] Producers of the film would be Company Films' Stephen Hamel, Start Media's Michael Maher, and Original Film's Ori Marmur & Neal H. Moritz.[11] In February 2016, Aurora Perrineau's casting in the film as Aurora's best friend was confirmed.[13]
Filming
Principal photography on the film began in September 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia.[14][15]
Release
In August 2015, Sony Pictures Entertainment set the film for a December 21, 2016 release.[16]
