Peringathur is a census town in Talassery taluk of Kannur district in the Indian state of Kerala. It is part of Greater Mahé Region.
Demographics
As of 2001 India census,[2] Peringathur had a population of 42,079. Males constitute 45% of the population and females 55%. Peringathur has an average literacy rate of 80%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 79%. In Peringathur, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Geographical
It is believed that the name "Peringathur" was derived from Peringalath Ur, means the place where great wars took place. It gradually became Peringathur. Kanakamala, a small hill, situated near Peringathur where the asram of renowned writer "Nithya Chaithanya Yathi" is situated. This town situated in the southern border of Kannur district. Mahe(uniton territory) is only 6 km from here. This town is in Peringalam grama panchayath. Mayyazhi river is flowing through this town. Nadapuram is only 9 km from here.
