Perry Township is one of the fourteen townships of Lawrence County, Ohio, United States. The 2000 census found 6,813 people in the township, 5,476 of whom lived in the unincorporated portions of the township.[3]
Geography
Located in the southern part of the county along the Ohio River, it borders the following townships:
- Lawrence Township - north
- Fayette Township - east
- Upper Township - west
Across the Ohio River from Perry Township is the mouth of the Big Sandy River, which forms the border between Boyd County, Kentucky to the west and Wayne County, West Virginia to the east.
It is located in the middle of Lawrence County's Ohio River townships.
The farthest southern point of Perry Township is occupied by part of South Point, the second-largest municipality in Lawrence County, and a tiny part of Coal Grove extends into western Perry Township. As well, the unincorporated community of Rock Camp is located in northwestern Perry Township.
Name and history
It is one of twenty-six Perry Townships statewide.[4]
Government
The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. There is also an elected township fiscal officer,[5] who serves a four-year term beginning on April 1 of the year after the election, which is held in November of the year before the presidential election. Vacancies in the fiscal officership or on the board of trustees are filled by the remaining trustees.
Education
The educational services of Perry Township are provided by Dawson-Bryant Local School District (K-12), South Point Local School District(K-12), along with the Rock Hill School District(K-12).
