Luke Reynolds (born April 20, 1979) is a Grammy nominated American songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer and studio musician best known as a member of Guster since 2010, and as a founding member of the bands Blue Merle and Pictures And Sound.

Childhood

Luke Reynolds was born and raised in and around Cornwall Vermont in a geodesic dome that his parents built in 1970.[1] His mother worked in education. His father was a computer programmer and built boats and guitars.[2]

Blue Merle

In 1999, Reynolds moved to Nashville to pursue music and attend Belmont University. He interned at Compass Records and Lost Highway Records. In 2002, he formed the band Blue Merle with upright bassist Jason Oettel and violinist Patrick Ross. The band signed with Universal Publishing, Island Records, CAA and Red Light Management. In February 2004, they began recording their debut album Burning In The Sun in Charlottesville, VA with British producer Stephen Harris who had previously worked with Ben Kweller and U2. Strings were cut at Abbey Road in London and additional vocals recorded at Quad Studios in Nashville.

In February 2005, Blue Merle released Burning In The Sun, which featured the singles "Burning In The Sun", "Every Ship Must Sail Away", and "Lucky To Know You". The album hit #8 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and peaked at #199 on the Billboard 200.[3] The single, Burning In The Sun, went top 5 at AAA radio and stayed there for over 8 weeks.[4] They performed at Lollapalooza,[5] Farm Aid and Bonnaroo and toured with J.J. Cale, Dave Mathews and Guster. Their last show was Friday, April 21, 2006 at Vanderbilt University's Rites of Spring music festival.[6]

Pictures And Sound

Immediately following Blue Merle,[7] he left Nashville and spent the next two and a half years writing a body of work which would be released under the name Pictures And Sound. Gary Paczosa signed him to Vanguard Records.[8] Pictures And Sound was released in August 2008. The album was produced by Jacquire King [9][10] and featured a duet with Willie Nelson.[11] Recording took place in Nashville at House Of David Studios.

Guster

Before starting their 2010 fall tour, Guster announced that Joe Pisapia would not be touring with the band. Instead, Joe would be touring with k.d. lang with whom he had been writing songs. It was also announced that Luke Reynolds would be filling in for Joe starting September 12, 2010.[12][13] In 2014 the band began recording Evermotion with producer Richard Swift[14] in Cottage Grove, OR. Evermotion was released on January 13, 2015.[15]

Solo Work and Studio Work

In addition to Blue Merle, Pictures And Sound, and Guster, he has released multiple solo albums and works heavily as a studio musician. In 2006, he released The Space Between The Lines EP produced by Jason Lehning. The title track was co-written with Tim O'Brien who also recorded it as well as another one of their co-writes Turn The Page on Tim's album, Traveler. He has also worked extensively with mentor and producer Gary Paczosa. In 2009 he played pedal steel on Sarah Jarosz's record Song Up In Her Head which peaked at #1 on the Billboard Bluegrass Charts.[16][17]

In 2010 he released the Maps EP, which was made following encouragement from mentor Jacquire King to cut masters instead of demos. Maps was co-produced by Reynolds and Brad Bivens and featured guest vocals by Tift Merritt, Madi Diaz and Ryan Miller of the band Guster. In 2010 he moved from Topanga Canyon, CA to Brooklyn, NY. While in NYC he collaborated with Jesse Harris, Sam Cohen, Yellowbirds, and Brazilian guitarist Guilherme Montiero.
