Piedmont Hospital
Piedmont Hospital is a major hospital at 2002 Peachtree Road at Collier Road in the Buckhead area of Atlanta, Georgia.
History
Washington Street location
Piedmont was established in 1905 as the Piedmont Sanitarium, the successor to Amster's private sanitorium, in the former mansion of Charles Thomas Swift of S.S.S. Tonic. The mansion was located at the northwest corner of Capitol and Crumley streets in the then-affluent Washington-Rawson neighborhood. The name was changed to Piedmont Hospital and eventually the hospital took up an entire square block. The Washington-Rawson neighborhood was razed in the early 1960s to make way for Atlanta Fulton County Stadium and its parking lots; now the site is part of the large Turner Field parking lot.
Present location
The current location of the hospital was once the "Deerland Park" estate, which the hospital bought from the Spalding family in 1943; ground was broken in 1954.[1][2]
Piedmont Hospital was mentioned by Newt Gingrich in the congressional newspaper The Hill in December 2006. Mr. Gingrich indicated that both Piedmont Hospital and PeaceHealth of Eugene, Oregon had the two best "digital" healthcare information systems in the United States.
Four other hospitals in and near metro Atlanta are owned by Piedmont Healthcare Corporation. The 35-bed Mountainside Medical Center, renamed Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in June 2004, is located along Georgia 515 near Jasper, Georgia. The 100-bed Fayette Community Hospital opened on Highway 54 in Fayetteville, Georgia in September 1997, and became Piedmont Fayette Hospital in November 2004. Piedmont agreed to buy 143-bed Newnan Hospital in Newnan, Georgia in January 2006, and finalized the deal in May 2006, making it Piedmont Newnan Hospital. Piedmont Newnan Hospital reopened in its new building on Poplar Road in Newnan in May 2012. With 136 beds, the 362,376 square-foot hospital is the tallest structure in the Newnan area. In January 2012, Henry Medical Center in Stockbridge joined the Piedmont family to become Piedmont Henry Hospital.
The Piedmont Healthcare group also includes Piedmont Heart Institute, the Piedmont Physicians Group, the Piedmont Clinic physician network, and the Piedmont Healthcare Foundation, a philanthropic entity for private fund-raisers.
