Premendra Mazumder

Premendra Mazumder is working on Cinema in versatile capacities. As a Film Critic, writes extensively for various publications worldwide. Authored books on Hundred Years of Indian Cinema and Film Society Movement in India.^[1] Edited several film journals. Worked in the Editorial Board of the Dictionnaire du cinéma asiatique ^[2] published in Oct. 2008 by the Nouveau Monde Editions ^[3] Member of the Federation Internationale Presse de Cinematographique FIPRESCI ^[4] since 2001. Contributed on cinema for the international publications like: Positif (Paris),^[5] Film Realm (Cairo), Cinema (Portugal), Screen (Mumbai), DNA (Mumbai),^[6] Cinemaya (Delhi), Filmbuff (Kolkata), Chitralipi (Kolkata), Deep Focus (Bangalore),^[7] Indian Film Culture (Mumbai/ Bangalore/ Kolkata) ^[8] and several others. Authored the chapter Music in Mainstream Indian Cinema ^[9] for the Routledge Handbook of Indian Cinemas ^[10] published from London in Apr. 2013. Edited the book The Poet of Celluloid on the life and works of the master film maker Buddhadeb Dasgupta published by the Federation of Film Societies of India ^[11] in Feb. 2014. Presently he is editing the special issue of Indian Film Culture on 100-Years of Indian Cinemas to be published by Federation of Film Societies of India and writing his next book on Bollywood.

Premendra has participated different international film festivals in home & abroad on several academic assignments. Presented key-note paper on Globalization and Cinema at the Seminar of the International Film Festival of Bangladesh Dhaka in Sept. 2003. Participated in the panel of the Seminar on Human Rights and Cinema at Cairo International Film Festival in Nov. 2008. Attended interactive sessions for promotion of cinema with the filmmakers of Mongolia and Ulaanbaatar City Government at Ulaanbaatar Film Festival, Mongolia in Apr. 2005.^[19] Participated in the International Workshop for the Promotion of Myanmar Cinema in Yangon in Dec. 2012. Delivered Lecture on Changing Image of Women in Indian Cinema ^[20] at the Subversive Festival Film in Zagreb, Croatia in May 2011 where he also participated in the Round Table Discussion with the master filmmaker Shyam Benegal.^[21]

He works as the curator, consultant and programmer for several film festivals in Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas. He works for the International Critics' Week Cannes since 2006 ^[22] and for the Cairo International Film Critics Week ^[23] since its inception. He has presented the Celebration Ceremony of 100 Years of Indian Cinema in Croatia in May 2013.^[24] As a special invitee attended the International Festival of Film Societies in different cities of Italy for consecutive five years from 2003 to 2007. As an International Film Critic he was invited to attend the 3rd Eurasia International Film Festival Almaty, Kazakhstan in Oct. 2007 ^[25] and Cairo International Film Festival in Nov. 2012 and Nov. 2014.^[26]

He organizes film appreciation courses and film workshops in India and abroad regularly. As a guest faculty attended the 2nd International Film Workshop of Nepal in Kathmandu and Dolakha in Feb. 2012.^[27] Participated as the speaker in the National Seminars on Cinema and Society at Dibrugarh University ^[28] in March 2012 and at Siliguri College ^[29] in March 2013 both sponsored by the University Grants Commission (India).^[30] Besides these, he also has participated in several interactive sessions, seminars, symposiums and workshops in Chennai International Film Festival,^[31] Third Eye Asian Film Festival Mumbai,^[32] Bangalore International Film Festival,^[33] Hyderabad International Film Festival, Guwahati International Film Festival,^[34] Assam International Film Festival Jorhat,^[35]^[36] Siliguri International Film Festival,^[37] Bangla Film Festival Nagpur,^[38] Jamshedpur International Film Festival, International Film Festival of Bangladesh and others.

Premendra works as the script writer, script consultant and festival consultant for the independent film makers. He subtitles films from Bengali and Hindi to English. Some of his important works are the subtitles of Third Person Singular Number (2009),^[39] Necklace (2011),^[40] Shajarur Kanta (2015 film) ^[41] and many others. Some of his important works include his interview on Cinema: Art or Industry,^[42] e-book on Folk Songs of Bengal,^[43] articles on Ritwik Ghatak ^[44] and Shyam Benegal.^[45] As playwright he has five major plays to his credit.He has written screenplays for two Indian feature films in Bengali language.

He is a film society activist working from the grass-root level to apex level for more than three decades. Participated the 3rd World Conference of Film Societies and the General Assembly of the International Federation of Film Societies ^[46] at Recife Brazil in Dec. 2010 as the official delegate of India where he got elected as the Secretary-Asia of IFFS for the term 2010-2012. He is the Founder President of Film Critics Circle of India ^[47] and Founder Secretary of the Film Critics Association of India. He has been elected as the General Secretary of Federation of Film Societies of India (Official Website) for the term 2014-16.

He has inaugurated the KIIT University Campus Film Society ^[48]^[49] on 5th Jan. 2015 and delivered a Lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Kashipur on 11th Jan. 2015.^[50] On 22nd Feb. 2015 he has inaugurated the Kala Bhavana ^[51] Campus Film Society at Visva Bharati, Santiniketan. He conducted the seminar on Bengali Cinema on 22nd Mar. 2015 at the Golden Jubilee Celebration Ceremony of Berhampore Film Society.^[52] He was the Special Guest^[53] for the inauguration of the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the Gauhati Cine Club held on 26 April 2015 at ^[54] Guwahati, Assam. He inaugurated Sree Chaitanya College Campus Film Society Habra West Bengal on 6 May 2015 and the Golden Jubilee Celebration of Burnpur Film Society (1965-2015) on 17 May 2015 at Burnpur, West Bengal. He initiated 1st FFSI International Film Festival travelling in 40+ cities in India.^[55]^[56]^[57] The Festival was inaugurated on 3 Aug. 2015 in Kolkata.^[58]^[59] As it's General Secretary he organized the national assembly of the Federation of Film Societies of India in Bhubaneswar on 20-22 Aug. 2015. He presented the 1st Kalinga International Film Festival at the Campus of the KIIT University, Bhubaneswar (22-25 Aug. 2015).^[60]^[61]^[62]^[63]^[64]^[65]^[66]^[67] He visted Dhaka and Rajshahi of Bangladesh in Nov. 2015. He was the speaker of the seminar on Contemporary Bengali Cinema along with the eminent filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta at the Seminar Hall of Shilpakala Academy Dhaka on 15 Nov. 2015. He was felicitated by Ritwik Ghatak Film Society and Rajshahi Film Society on 17 Nov. 2015 at Rajshahi, Bangladesh for his contribution to the film society movement. On 18 Nov. he took part in the inauguration ceremony of the Beyond Border Bengali Film Festival which he organised with the Mass Communication Department of the Rajshahi University with the support of the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh.
