Qarabulaq (known as Martunashen until 1992)[1] is a village and municipality in the Getashen of Artsakh. It has a population of 252.
Before the Nagorno-Karabakh War, it was populated by Armenians.[2] Its Armenian population was forcefully evicted and deported by Soviet special forces during Operation Ring in 1991. [2] This operation was one of the most brutal and bloodiest of the war, but the population of Martunashen was able to successfully flee the impending massacre due to the heroic actions of Simon Achikgyozyan of Arabo Detachment who died defending the town and concentrating the fire from the oncoming tanks on his position while the townspeople fled through the forests to safety.
